The donkeys were operating on the grass by the play area on West shore today. Seemed to be doing quite well too.

Good to see in hte NWWN that plans are rolling along to replace the rather horrible 1960s Prom Shelters with more ornate ones, using the original Victorian designs. $good$

Went for a drive round Marine Drive this afternoon, taking the long route to Cafe Dewi for our coffee and Lemon Meringue Tart.    Half way round at the area opposite the Rest and Be Thankful, there was a whole Film Crew with the full size catering coach and dressing rooms.  An enquiry revealed that they were filming for some Children's programme, but don't know which one.

Hope that CCBC screwed a big location fee out of them!    :D

This is interesting. Marc Rees did a great job with the Adain Avion event last year. I am looking forward to the Prom showing of Jaws and the Music of John Williams concert especially.

Recreating the past in 2013: new arts festival will give cultural bite to resort
25 Jul 2013 10:49

A major new arts festival with a contemporary twist is aimed at giving a resort a major out of season tourism  boost.

Llawn 01 will take Llandudno’s Victorian heritage as a theme but will use contemporary performance artists to bring it to life.

It’s the brainchild of Mostyn Estates managing director Edward Hiller, who said the aim is to boost business in the resort.

Creative director for the September 20-22 event is Marc Rees, who last year caused a buzz when he brought his Adain Avian aeroplane fuselage conceptual art to the town.

“Adain Avian attracted about 17,000 visitors which was very encouraging, and we hope and anticipate that Llawn 01 should surpass that,” he said.

He will use replica Victorian bathing machines like the ones that used to line Llandudno’s North Shore as focal points for the event.

And several of the town’s empty buildings like the Tudno Castle Hotel, historic Tabernacl Chapel,  and the former Royal Air Force Association Club will  be used as exhibition spaces.

“There will be an eclectic mix of about 20 events over the weekend. For instance, for Tabernacl Chapel  I have commissioned Eddie Ladd, who is one of the leading performance artists in Wales, and she will recontextualise the chapel’s history referring back to when the famous preacher Rev Lewis Valentine was minister there.

“She will recreate the history of the chapel in a contemporary way, and harpist  Helen Wynne-Parry will work with her to do that,” he explained.

Each of the seven bathing machines will have a theme. One will be occupied by artist Anthony Dewhurst who will create Victorian style portraits of visitors.

“And my own bathing machine will be a time machine which will bring two Victorian time travellers to Llandudno who will be walking through the town trying to fit in with today’s visitors,” he chuckled.

The festival will climax with a pop-up cinema on the seafront showing the film Jaws, which will be preceded by a concert featuring theme music from films by the composer John Williams.

Going back to Victorian times: plans for promenade shelters based on 1899 design
25 Jul 2013 10:32

Promenade shelters which have been described as concrete monstrosities could be demolished and replaced with Victorian style buildings.

The shelters on Llandudno’s North Shore were 1960s replacements for the original structures which dated from the late 19th century.

But Conwy County Council officers are recommending they should be replaced by something more in keeping with the town’s Victorian heritage.

“Llandudno’s major assets are its heritage and Victorian character,” said the council’s tourism chief Jim Jones.

“Continuing with the image of Victorian Llandudno will realise the resort’s potential, heighten its profile and boost tourism, encouraging the town to thrive for generations to come.

“This project is aimed at enhancing the visitor experience of Llandudno, leading to an increased footfall on the promenade and in the town centre allowing for more spending in the retail outlets.”

The scheme has been enthusiastically received by landowners Mostyn Estates, Llandudno Town Council, the town’s Hospitality Association and Development Partnership.

And and the town council and Mostyn Estates have both pledged to make substantial contributions to the cost of seven new shelters, with the initial cost for each estimated at around £50,000.

Mayor Gary Burchett said: “Getting rid of those concrete monstrosities and replacing them with replicas of the Victorian originals will make the North Parade look more attractive.

“We are very supportive of the scheme and will make a substantial contribition towards the costs.”

And Mostyn Estates managing director Edward Hiller said in addition to offering to make a financial contribution, the company had been able to supply the county council with the plans for the original shelters.

“We found plans dated 1899 in a desk drawer in the offices and these will be used as the template for the design of the new shelters which will mean they will look pretty authentic.

“We are prepared to put money towards the cost of the shelter and it would be good if other businesses or private individuals in the town were willing to match us pound for pound and do the same,” he added.

It sounds a good idea in principle as long as it is practical in this modern day but I've forgotten the reason why the previous Victorian style shelters were replaced by these "concrete monstrosities"  as I presume Mostyn Estates had to approve of the change at that time.

Mostyn Estates managing director Edward Hiller said in addition to offering to make a financial contribution, the company had been able to supply the county council with the plans for the original shelters.

“We found plans dated 1899 in a desk drawer in the offices and these will be used as the template for the design of the new shelters which will mean they will look pretty authentic.

“We are prepared to put money towards the cost of the shelter and it would be good if other businesses or private individuals in the town were willing to match us pound for pound and do the same,”

That's a very generous gesture by the Estate but as they would own the shelters shouldn't they pay for them in full?

Not sure the new shelters will blend in with the windfarm in the background.

In a few years it will be replaced with a Victorian wind farm!
