I've often wondered about the ground that Llandudno is built on, I'm assuming mainly sand? Have another look at the picture I posted here the other day of Cafe Culture!

I'm sure I read somewhere a long time ago that there was a mine adit in the area, but apparently it wasn't mapped so obviously it didn't exist.  :oLooking at the clay laden water which is surrounding the site this morning, I hate to think what they have found.

Many of the buildings we have in Llandudno were meant to be temporary... the Victorians thought that at least.
So some were built directly onto the sand, or at best had very shallow footings.

None of them would pass today's stricter building controls.

My Cottage in Somerset Street was built like that. I was looking at the shingle under the floorboards just this afternoon. I'm not too worried about the house shifting though as the walls are two feet thick and built out of Penmaenmawr Black Granite. If thats classed as temporary good on my Victorian builders  $walesflag$

The Victorians were very good builders. Because they had no concept of stress tolerances, they tended to over engineer everything (e.g. piers, bridges) massively, which accounted for their longevity in comparison with modern constructions.

Where you are now, you must be built straight onto the rock, I'd have thought?

Dave, BlongB still owns the cottage in Somerset St, I believe, and THAT is where he was looking at the shale...

Readers may recall that I mentioned a week or two back about the Alexandra Hotel putting back in the missing 'O' in their HOTEL sign. Well, today was the day that an access platform was hired to do the job. Unfortunately for the operators, the access platform broke down shortly after they had replaced the 'O', leaving them stranded in mid air for quite a while! I happened to be passing and grabbed a few photos:

Following the post made the other day about damage to the Camera Obscura, I made the effort to go up and take a look. The roof has been quite badly damaged by metal thieves, sadly. I have notified CCBC.

via Llandudno Lifeboat Crew on Facebook

Llandudno Lifeboat is being launched tomorrow 21/03/12 at 1800 Llandudno North shore slip way next to the pier. Why not come down and see how we operate all our machinery. Especially now that we have started to have day light hours

We went down but as it was only the inshore lifeboat being launched we decided not to stay as it got quite cold on the prom.

I bumped into DaveR and Fester whilst out and about this afternoon. Fester, I forgot to mention that a pack of frozen peas put on your back will some times work better than a hot pack. If it's not any better in a couple of days, don't suffer give Theresa Morgans BSc(Ost) DO RGN a try, Coniston Clinic, 30 Mostyn Avenue, 01492 871912 Hope your back is better soon.
