DP piece on the story..

Llandudno granted sandy beach for sea defence scheme
A Conwy Council committee has opted to replace stone with sand on the town's North Shore, though the decision still needs rubber stamping

"Improvements are needed as the resort’s sea levels are estimated to rise by between 0.89-1.21m over the next 100 years.

Council officers preferred a cheaper, £6.7m option of maintaining a cobble bank whilst increasing the height of the promenade wall at a total cost of around

The second option, backed by the public, was to remove the cobbles, replace sand and manage erosion by using timber groynes.

This will cost almost £23.9m, though the council can apply for a share of £150m on offer from the Welsh Government as part of its Coastal Risk Management Programme.

As well as providing greater flexibility, the “sand option” is likely to attract more people to the beach, according to the coastal forum.

On the downside, beach sand will need frequent and costly topping up, and wind-blown sand may affect nearby properties and roads.

Moreover, the rear promenade wall will still need to be raised within 50 years to prevent possible sea flooding.2

Yes you are correct Cambrian they are, but they are not locals, maybe if they were they would have listened, mind you it was a very few that made that costly bad decision to dump Quarry rocks on the beach, I will keep saying it, Why did they dredge the sand for colwyn bay from Llandudnos first line of defence the constable bank.

This is a colossal problem, and, unlike climate change, the answers are far from clear cut.  The projected sea level rise is just that: projected. It might not happen at all. There's a huge amount we still don't understand about tides and oceans so planning for the long term - i.e. fifty - seventy years, is an exercise in futility.

Some things are clear, however. Llandudno needs a sandy shore. The prevailing winds  blow from the South West, so blown sand, lying predominately below the prom levels, is unlikely to cause much of an issue in the town. A higher beach composed of sand will mitigate many of the worst effects of rare high tides and storms. Yes - it will need topping up, much as they have to do with Miami's beach now. But this would be great training for the navy and the Royal Engineers.

It would take half a million tons approx. to  bring the sandy beach up to the level of the prom right up to the pier entrance but the returns would be incalculable.

The air ambulance has landed on the Llandudno Promenade as medics attend an ongoing incident.

The Caernarfon-based helicopter landed beside the beach at around 10.50am on Friday, with police blocking part of the promenade to allow for the landing.

The nature of the incident has not yet been disclosed.

Why there won't be sand on Llandudno beach again 'any time very soon', according to council boss

"We will not be putting sand on the beach any time very soon because we need to develop the plan but also find that very significant amount of money.

"There's a lot of work, persuasion, to be done before we go putting sand on the beach, which I agree would be a fabulous thing for Llandudno."

The big obstacle now is to produce plans and a business case so Conwy county council can bid for a chunk of the £150m Coastal Risk Management Programme funding on offer from Welsh Government.

I seem to remember that transportation of all the rocks on lorries caused Maesdu bridge to be closed for quite a time due to it being weakened by the weight.I only hope that CCBC remember this if they do decide to shift them all.

If you were wondering why a stunt plane put on an amazing aerial display over Llandudno's West Shore yesterday, this might help explain.

Devoted husband John Droog organised the display as an unusual gift for his wife Susan's birthday.

At about 5pm, the red and white aircraft began sweeping across the sky towards the Great Orme, and climbing steeply before falling earthward, the display continued for five or six minutes then the pilot flew away towards North Shore.

The aircraft came from the Bedfordshire-based Mark Jefferies Air Shows. It's made up of team leader Mark, Chris Burkett, Steve Carver and Cris Heames.

Together, they form the Global Stars aerobatic team, according to their website.
They fly a state of the art aircraft called an Extra 330S
Pilot Mark Jefferies, 62, was the pilot said: "It was birthday gift and a gift to the town as well! Mrs Droog phoned me afterwards to thank me."

Describing yesterday's flight, Mr Jefferies, who has previously flown over the Wirral, said he flew over the shore of Llandudno and Deganwy at between 500ft and 1,900ft.

“The plane seemed to appear out of nowhere and started thundering over Maesdu Golf Club and North Wales Golf Club, its engine roaring.

"It made quite a few passes along the shore. It also climbed almost vertically, and dropped down, several times. It was ‘heart in the mouth’ stuff!”

A controversial plan to build 49 residential units on green land next to a school for children with special needs has been submitted.

The Anwyl development on Bodafon Fields off Nant y Gamar Road, Llandudno, has faced fierce opposition from local residents over what they claim will be the effect on traffic in the area.

A public meeting has been hosted by Aberconwy MS Janet Finch-Saunders and a petition has gained more than 340 signatories.

REPAIR work is set to be carried out at The Cenotaph in Llandudno.

Conwy County Borough Council will carry out repointing and fence repairs at the memorial on Prince Edward Square over the summer.

The work will be completed ahead of commemorations to mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion (RBL) this year.

Residents and schools that have laid hand-painted stones at the foot of the memorial are being urged to collect them before the end of July, any remaining stones will be moved to the former Llandudno RBL office on Vaughan Street.

“We wanted to let people know the stones will be moved as if we took away without notice there could be uproar and rightfully so,” said Llandudno RBL secretary Alan Guinn.

“They will be on view at the old Llandudno RBL office where meetings are held.

“The stones will be kept there and every year we will now be moving stones from the memorial in July to look after the memorial.”

Other plans to mark the 100th anniversary of the RBL include a slate memorial and a flower display beneath the Miss Alice clock at North Shore.                                          ref Pioneer

Update on the above "Maelgwyn Road, Car Park" posts.. this will definitely impact an already over stretched off road parking situation,
please sign the petition if you feel Llandudno cannot afford the loss of these spaces.

"Conwy County Borough Council currently lease the Maelgwyn Road Car Park in Llandudno.  The lease is due to be expire during 2022 and the landowner has indicated that they would like the council to vacate the car park so McCarthy Stone can construct 55 retirement flats, with 21 private car parking spaces, on the existing car park.  The development would result in 126 public car parking spaces being lost from Llandudno town centre.

The council's Environment, Roads and Facilities department are resisting the development.  If you have strong views on the development, please complete e-petition below - details from petition will be shared with Conwy County Borough Council and may be shared with McCarthy Stone as well as the owners of the car park."

Maelgwyn Road Car Park Petition at   https://www.harrysaville.org.uk/maelgwyn-road-car-park-petition

Update..... McCarthy and Stone sending out leaflets re their proposed plans for Maelgwyn st car park..........looks like 4 stories high and not a lot of room left for parking, and the flats at the end, are dwarfed by this plan.

What a horrible monstrosity, if this council approve that it has to be looked into, wonder when the carpark on the other side has to go on that lease, why have this council let the lease run down like this should have renewed it 2/3 years ago.

I have been reading some FB comments on McCarthy and Stones first building, Cwrt Gloddaeth, that they are like rabbit hutches, (I remember speaking to someone in Bryant and Hocknels furniture store telling me that they were having trouble getting furniture into the building, let alone the flats,) apart from the flats being tiny, there is a lack of parking, (50 flats/ 20 spaces ? ? ) and they are lease hold, and I believe this is going to be the case with the Maelgwyn development ?
