DOZENS of cars costing less than £500 will hit the road from Llandudno to Torquay in a banger rally later this year.

The Veterans Banger Rally 2021 has been organised by former Navy anti-submarine John McGowan, from Prestatyn, who has attracted attention with the hearse limousine he has refurbished with a Men in Black theme.

The original plan to drive 1,500 miles to Gibraltar was halted due to fears over a third wave of Covid-19 in Europe so they have instead decided to stage the long-distance rally on home turf in September.

It will see more than 300 people in 70 teams drive from Staffordshire to Llandudno, down to Torquay, across to Skegness, on up to Newcastle, over to Blackpool before finishing in Runcorn.

Interesting story on the Penderyn whisky company, opening soon in Llandudno..........

The whisky novice who made Penderyn one of Wales' best-known brands turning over £15m
Former steel and logistics exec Stephen Davies has what must be one of the best jobs in Wales with a role at the helm of one of the nation's best-loved exports

Stephen Davies was working in the Netherlands as part of a global logistics business when he got a call from a former boss telling him he should visit a tin shed in a tiny village at the top of the Cynon valley.

The shed was home to a fledgling business called Penderyn Whisky Company – a distillery tucked away producing just a few barrels of the Welsh spirit that year but one with much bigger dreams.

"They were looking for someone to run the business and get it off the ground," said Stephen. It was 2003 and the Penderyn brand had been launched but they had no customers.

So how did a man with 20 years working in the steel and logistics industry wind up as someone in charge of a shed full of copper stills and one of the most iconic Welsh brands?

As Stephen admits himself he knew nothing about whisky apart from having developed a taste for the "elegant" spirit as a younger man. But what he did know was how to get stuff done.

Hearing various rumours.......................

1.  That there are flats being built on part of Maelgwyn Road, Car Park   ?

2.  That the new flats on the Brynt hocknell site, have been allocated car parking spaces on this car park.  ?

Regarding the old Bryant & Hocknell site the original application for the development had 6 parking spaces a shortfall of 17 spaces. So the developer Brenig Construction had to pay an S106 to CCBC an obligation of £58,140 (17 shortfall spaces X £114 X 30 years). This money goes towards provision, improvements & maintenance of public car parks & on street parking in the locality. They have recently had to put in a variation of the planning approval as they have to move the bin store & in doing this have lost another two parking spaces. One space has been allocated on Deganwy Avenue so another £3,420 has to be paid. This variation application for moving the bin store has been refused. The Traffic & Network Manager has again pointed out the shortfall of parking spaces as there is 32 bedrooms but only 4 parking spaces on this last variation application, so it isn't clear as to where all these people are going to park. As for building more flats on Maelgwyn Road there doesn't appear to be an application on the Planning Portal at the moment.

As far as I have been told by one of the residents, there aren't sufficient parking spaces at Court Gloddaeth, the McCarthy and Stone block opposite for the number of flats, so this situation occurs there as well.
Mad, Bad and Dangerous to know.

Arrest warrant issued for Llandudno anti-lockdown protester
Matthew Ginsberg, 42, of Bethel near Caernarfon, Gwynedd, failed to turn up in court.       He has obviously got mental health issues but that doesn't excuse him for his behaviour during the pandemic, but Cllr Sam Rowlands was no better when he was going to arrange a peaceful demonstration around the same time.

Llandudno nightclub boss wants car showroom on grounds - but it's not gone down well
Broadway Boulevard owner says will help with extra income after being shut for a year but others questioned the 'quality of offering'

"speaks volumes for the expected quality of offering" and would be "more akin to that delivered further east along the coast" than in Llandudno."    :o

A section in the recent article https://www.northwalespioneer.co.uk/news/19312775.qc-calls-llandudnos-pier-pavilion-decision-unlawful/on the Pier redevelopment thread, raises my original query, "That there are flats being built on part of Maelgwyn Road, Car Park " also hearing of a petition to stop the building of these flats ?

"Also the council had been informed the landowner of a nearby council car park had decided to terminate the lease to the authority next year, further causing parking problems for staff and customers using the proposed restaurant at the development."

I went into Llandudno today to do some shopping and the place was heaving with tourists.    It will be good for the town but it was a bit of a shock after isolating for so long.
With the predicted warm weather coming for the forthcoming Bank Holiday I'll stay well clear of the shops.
I have noticed more people in shops not wearing masks so I hope that all the good work done by the NHS is not undone by people not following the rules that are still in place

Update on the above "Maelgwyn Road, Car Park" posts.. this will definitely impact an already over stretched off road parking situation,
please sign the petition if you feel Llandudno cannot afford the loss of these spaces.

"Conwy County Borough Council currently lease the Maelgwyn Road Car Park in Llandudno.  The lease is due to be expire during 2022 and the landowner has indicated that they would like the council to vacate the car park so McCarthy Stone can construct 55 retirement flats, with 21 private car parking spaces, on the existing car park.  The development would result in 126 public car parking spaces being lost from Llandudno town centre.

The council's Environment, Roads and Facilities department are resisting the development.  If you have strong views on the development, please complete e-petition below - details from petition will be shared with Conwy County Borough Council and may be shared with McCarthy Stone as well as the owners of the car park."

As an aside, the potential number of spaces at Maelgwyn Road is about the same as those on the underused car park at the railway station.  Funny Conwy don't seem to sign that one on the approaches.

Who is the owner of the car park, is it Mostyn Estates?
