New law will ban traveller camps with £2,500 fine and jail term
Intentional trespass will become a criminal offence - giving police instant new powers to arrest people and seize vehicles
For years the travellers have been causing problems and although they shouldn't be travelling anywhere now, I don't envy the Police on this new law

A former North Wales Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner is seeking the Plaid Cymru nomination for the top job.

Appointed in 2016 to assist Arfon Jones shortly after his election to the post, Ann Griffith has revealed she is seeking the Plaid Cymru nomination for the position following his decision not to seek re-election.

Labour is the only party known to have officially put forward a candidate thus far, nominating Flintshire councillor Andy Dunbobbin for the £70,000-a-year role.

Originally from Barmouth in Gwynedd, Ms Griffith later became an Anglesey county councillor for the Bro Aberffraw ward before stepping down for the 2017 local elections.

I hope the post goes to someone from outside the Police and the PCC office. There have been so many doubts about the independence and integrity of former police officers being appointed to this role. Arfon Jones worked with former Police Superintendent Gordon Anglesea, a convicted sex offender (amongst other things).

A POLICE boss and two abuse charities are urging men in North Wales to do more to help women feel safe in the wake of the abduction and murder of Sarah Everard.

North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones, the Domestic Abuse Safety Unit North Wales and the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre (RASASC) North Wales were frustrated the onus appeared to be on women to keep themselves safe rather than men changing their behaviour.

Mr Jones, a former police inspector, said women had posted helpful tips on social media, most of which were small gestures that could make a big difference to how safe women feel walking alone at night.

“Women are not attacked because they park in the wrong place, or because they aren’t paying attention to their surroundings when out in public............“Women get attacked because men attack them.

“Many women have taken to social media to explain what men can do to make women feel safer when they’re out on their own.
“This list is by no means exhaustive, but it’s based on the real experiences of multiple women.”

Keep your distance

When walking behind a girl or woman at night, remember that the closer you are, the more threatening you seem. So make sure to leave a good amount of distance between yourself and her.”

Alert women to their presence – but not by engaging in conversation

Approaching a woman in silence can provoke fear and panic. If you’re behind a woman and she cannot see you, try to make some noise to let them know you aren’t sneaking up behind them – call a friend, jingle keys – basically make any noise to draw attention to yourself

Offer to walk friends home

A stranger wouldn’t appreciate an offer from an unknown man to walk her home. But a friend might. Whilst you might think a route is safe or it’s only a short walk, having a male presence is sadly a valuable tool in warding off unwanted attention.

Talk to other men

Whilst staying away from women and being helpful to your female friends is all well and good, violence towards and harassment of women is a problem that is ingrained in our society. The true solution is changing the way that men treat women – and this means calling out your friends and other men when they’re crossing the line. If you want to make a true and meaningful change, bring up the fact that 97 per cent of young women have experience sexual harassment next time you’re with your male friends. The resulting conversation might surprise you.

Don’t run up from behind

Having someone run up behind you at night can give anyone a fright, but for a girl or woman it can be terrifying. Next time you’re out for an evening jog and see a woman walking ahead… cross the road or make sure to leave a good amount of space while passing.

Don’t stare

If you’re by yourself, being stared at is intimidating and unsettling. Taking out your phone and focusing on something else can go a long way to showing you’re not a threat. Look out the window to focus on something else, or call a friend to have a chat.

Keep comments to yourself

What you might see as just a bit of fun, or even flattering, is actually harassment and can be terrifying to lone women and girls.”

Keep your mates in line

You may not harass women, but if you stay quiet while your mates do then you’re part of the problem.

Be an active bystander

If you notice a woman is uncomfortable with someone’s behaviour, show your support by being an active bystander. It can be as simple as standing between a woman and her harasser to block their line of sight. Ask her if she is OK, and back up anyone else who is intervening

“Women do not ask to be harassed, stalked or assaulted and we have a collective responsibility to hold perpetrators of such abuse to account.

“It is not acceptable to make comments, follow either on foot or in a vehicle, beep at, call to or whistle at women or girls.

“As a mother of two teenage daughters who are regularly made uncomfortable and scared by this type of behaviour. We need to educate our sons, friends, colleagues and others who do this, explaining that it is not acceptable it is not appropriate, and it causes fear, and distress."

RASASC operations manager Fflur Emlyn said: “Women have a right to not only feel safe but BE safe – in public, at home, at work – everywhere.

“Sarah Everard was walking home, everyone of us can identify with this horrific incident, it could’ve been anyone of us: 97 per cent of women in Britain have been sexually harassed at some point during their lives.

“We welcome the Police and Crime Commissioners statement and advice, women are not to blame for being attacked and/or assaulted. There is and should be no shame, blame or guilt for any women who has been attacked/assaulted, it is always the perpetrators fault.

“Let’s talk about this, educate your male friends and family members and don’t be a bystander, all of us in society has a responsibility to hold such perpetrators to account.”

Mr Jones added: “If men follow these common sense guidelines it will make a real difference in making women feel safer when they are out on their own.

“Horrific crimes like this are rare and North Wales remains one of the safest places in the UK to live and work but these simple measures can do a great deal to address the fear of crime.”

North Wales Police said the incident, in which the tailgate of Ford Ranger was forced open, took place on Victoria Road.

It follows reports of another theft in Penrhyn Bay on Tuesday morning after tools were taken from a van.

Tips to help prevent home burglaries this spring and summer

Move keys away from the doors and windows

If you keep your keys next to your doors and windows, you’re providing thieves with easy access to valuables like cars. Instead, keep them in well-hidden safe places that are out of plain sight and a little more inconspicuous.

If you have to hide a spare key for a pet sitter or for any other reason while you’re away, at least try to make it difficult for a burglar to find by adding a decoy key. Most people hide a spare key underneath the doormat at the front door - so avoid doing this if you can. Instead, glue a decoy key down under the mat and hide the real one in a better location. Doing so will trip burglars up, and they’ll likely think twice before pursuing their illegal activities.

Check windows
Before leaving your home for an extended period of time, you’ll likely double and even triple check that your doors are locked - but do you put the same effort into ensuring all of your home’s windows are locked too? So many people fail to lock their windows, as day-to-day it’s easier to leave them unlocked for various reasons. But burglars will check to see if they can gain easy entry via an unlocked window.

Hide packaging and boxes
If you’ve recently taken delivery of a snazzy new TV or some other costly item, don’t leave the packaging at the side of your outdoor bins or in plain sight. Doing so is basically an advertisement to potential thieves - “look what we have for you to steal!”

Go incognito on social media
If you’re going away on holiday, refrain from posting any pictures or information about it online until you get back home. By flaunting your trip on social media whilst you’re away, you’re basically letting everyone know that you’re not at home - a perfect opportunity for thieves.

You would think tradesmen would have this sort of thing covered, this is the fourth case in as many weeks, reported locally.

A VAN was broken into and thousands of pounds of tools stolen in Mochdre.

North Wales Police said it investigated the incident, which took place overnight on Monday, but no evidence of forced entry were found on the vehicle.

Police have urged van owners to ensure their vehicles and property are secure.

"A Ford Transit van was broken into sometime over Monday night into Tuesday morning in Mochdre," NWP Community Safety Central tweeted.

"There was no obvious signs of forced entry on the van. £2000 worth of power tools have been stolen.

"Ask yourself how secure is my van and could a thief break in and steal my tools."

Labour’s Andy Dunbobbin has taken the vacant Police and Crime Commissioner role in North Wales after a nail-biting run-off.

He won with 98,034 overall votes defeating Conservative rival Pat by 7,885 votes after second preference ballots were added in.

Speaking in Connah’s Quay, where the results were announced, he said: “I take this role seriously.
“I understand I will be measured against my manifesto pledges by the people of North Wales.

This second story is probably more interesting..........
DOGS from the Cheshire and North Wales Police Alliance Dog section have now been issued with individual collar numbers and ID cards.

The decision to introduce collar numbers was taken following the passing of Finn’s Law in 2019, an initiative which saw PC David Wardell of Hertfordshire Police campaign tirelessly for the better protection of service dogs after his dog, Finn, was stabbed whilst pursuing a suspect.

Finn sustained serious stab wounds to his chest and head, but only criminal damage charges could be brought against the attacker.

Finn’s Law was eventually passed through parliament, which means that anyone who causes unnecessary suffering to a service animal whilst in the commission of its duties, will be able to be charged under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and they will no longer be able to hide behind the defence of fear.

This new legislation, coupled with the government’s plans to increase maximum sentences for animal cruelty offences to five years in prison, will make sure those who harm service animals are punished accordingly.

Just in case he moves to the Conwy area......

A fake police officer dressed in uniform called at a property claiming to be investigating a burglary.

North Wales Police are urging people to be vigilant after the man impersonated a police officer at a property on High Street in Tywyn, Gwynedd on Thursday.

Police said shortly before midday, they were called to a report that a man, in police uniform and claiming to be from North Wales Police, went to the property and said he was probing a recent burglary.

The man, described as being 5 feet and 10 inches tall, had a shaved head and was wearing black trousers, black boots and a hi-vis jacket with ‘police’ on the back.

Detective Sergeant Dafydd Hughes said: “We are urging people to be vigilant and to always report any suspicious behaviour.

High-tech blitz on North Wales crime hotspots unveiled by police boss.

Automatic number plate recognition and dozens of new CCTV cameras will be used for the blitz on burglaries, car crime and robberies in Colwyn Bay and Bangor.

It comes after North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin secured nearly £500,000 in extra funding.

The aim of the Safer Streets initiative is to clamp down on so-called acquisitive crimes which account for 60% of all offences.
