« Reply #180 on: December 06, 2019, 01:48:39 pm »
A "well-built" man with an Italian accent who is trying to flog coats and watches has sparked a police warning.

North Wales Police is concerned the man, who has told people he needs to get rid of the merchandise before heading back to Italy, might be selling fake goods.
He has been operating in the Llandudno area, and the force is now asking the public to be on their guard.

A spokesman for the force's West Conwy Coastal policing team said: "This week we have had two reports from Llandudno of what appears to be someone trying to sell counterfeit coats and watches.

"A man described as well-built and speaking with an Italian accent has been approaching people in the town centre and using high-pressure sales techniques to get them to buy the it

"The story he uses varies from simply being generous, to getting rid of left over exhibition items before returning to Italy."

Police asked anyone who is approached by the man to get in touch with them on 101, quoting reference numbers X174708 and X175410.

POLICE are asking home owners to remain vigilant in the West Conwy area following a number of burglaries over recent weeks.

The West Conwy Coastal area covers the likes of Colwyn Bay and Llandudno.

Sgt Sarah Hughes said: “We are asking people to ensure that their properties are properly secured, even if only going out for a short time. In most cases entry has been forced and items including jewellery and electrical devices have been stolen.

“We are determined to catch those responsible but we are reliant on public support and appeal to anyone with information to contact us immediately.
She added: “We are keen to hear from anyone who may see someone acting suspiciously or any suspicious vehicles in your area.”

Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to call 101, alternatively use the live webchat https://www.north-wales.police.uk/contact/live-chat-support or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Every bit helps............

MENTAL health clinicians and police have launched a rehabilitation initiative in a bid to tackle a high number of offenders suffering from a mental health crisis.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) has formed a new triage service at North Wales Police’s communications centre in St Asaph to review police incidents in which mental health is a factor and provide expert advice directly to officers.

North Wales Police has a high number of detentions under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act compared to similar sized forces, however only a small percentage of these detentions result in patients being formally admitted to hospital under the act.  cont.. https://www.northwalespioneer.co.uk/news/18128115.north-wales-police-partner-betsi-mental-health-experts/

'Hang up immediately' say police

Police forces around the UK are warning about a telephone scam that has tricked people out of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The scheme sees fraudsters pretend to be from Amazon to con victims into handing over their bank details.

Action Fraud, the national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime, has received hundreds of calls about the scam since last September - of which at least 200 were from people who were tricked out of more than £400,000 in total.

This is actually a variant of the "Please give us access t your computer so we can raid your bank account' scam that's been going for some years. The Amazon Prime bit is merely the latest vector.

As always there are two bits of golden advice we should all follow at all times:

1.  Never, ever give anyone access to your computer unless you've rung them first. Even then, think very carefully before you do it.

2. Never, ever follow a link in an email.
Nothing is so firmly believed as that which we least know.  ― Michel de Montaigne

A police boss has declared war on “despicably heartless” fraudsters.

The pledge from the region’s police and crime commissioner, Arfon Jones, came after the North Wales Police and Crime Panel unanimously gave the green light for a 25p a week - increase in the cost of policing.

The 4.5 per cent increase – the equivalent of a one minute landline call – will cost Band D householders just an extra £12.51 a year.

Police are warning disabled shoppers to be on their guard after a spate of thefts.

The warning comes after several reports of a distraction theft technique being employed in supermarket car parks and in on-street parking spaces around the region.

The thieves are stealing blue badges, which allow motorists to park for up to three hours free of charge and in disabled bays.
According to police, there was an incident at Aldi in Prestatyn on Tuesday.

A man was said to have approached a vehicle trying to sell leather coats. While the shoppers were distracted by the man, an accomplice reached into the vehicle and snatched the disabled parking permit.

A similar theft was attempted at Tesco in Llandudno Junction on Wednesday.
Both men were described as being of Mediterranean appearance, with Italian accents. They were said to be driving a red car.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "We saw this technique used by thieves in Llandudno last year.
"We urge motorists to please be aware and to report any suspicious incidents."

According to the Department for Transport, thefts of parking permits for disabled motorist have quadrupled in recent years.

Retired police officers say thousands of former colleagues would be willing to rejoin their forces and help the country cope with coronavirus.

Home Office figures show about 22,000 police officers in England and Wales retired over the past five years.
The Metropolitan Police is already asking retirees to come back.

Former Ch Supt Kul Mahay said many officers would "jump at the challenge" to help people feel safe.

The National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) said it was working with the government to facilitate the return of recently retired officers, depending on “local needs”.

Mr Mahay said retired officers had “a lot of experience” they could bring back to the service, but it was “subject for debate” whether they should be given full powers.

“It's possible we could return in more of a support role, to free up uniformed and non-uniformed staff to get out there and maintain order,” he said.     cont.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-52067772

Second bit of police news today...

Police are urging people not to put lives at risk by making unnecessary 999 calls amid the coronavirus outbreak.

North Wales Police says it has seen a significant increase in the number of calls over the last week, particularly on non-urgent matters.

Superintendent Neil Thomas, who is in charge of the control room in St Asaph, said: "This week has been another challenging one for North Wales Police with a surge of public calls into the control room from people trying to seek clarification on various issues related to the coronavirus.

"Whilst I appreciate that people are calling us in good faith, these calls are dealt with by emergency call handlers who are already working on high demand and reduced staffing levels.

"I would like to emphasise that we have well-rehearsed plans in place to ensure that we continue to provide a service the public.

"However, unnecessary calls into the control room is having a significant impact on our ability to deal with genuine calls and is putting people’s lives at risk.

"Please only call the police when necessary and do not revert to dialling 999 if we are unable to answer your 101 calls or webchat."

North Wales Police say there has also been an increase in the amount of reports being made about potential breaches of Government guidelines on social distancing and isolation.

"Our initial approach will be to engage with people who are not abiding to the guidelines before explaining why these rules are important and encouraging them to follow them," said Supt Thomas.

"If they are not compliant, then as a last resort we will enforce the emergency legislation brought in this week where necessary."

He added: "I want to encourage people to continue using the live webchat and email functions for non-urgent police matters.

"Thank you to everyone who has been doing this already in an effort to reduce the demand on our emergency call handlers, who are already working extremely hard to continue to support our response to incidents."

He added those seeking advice around COVID-19 and what it means for them should refer to the UK Government, Welsh Government and Public Health Wales websites for information and guidance.

We shouldn't have to do this but some people never listen.     Sometimes the law needs to be enforced the hard way

Police who stopped a car in North Wales during the coronavirus lockdown found that the four young men inside were making their way back from a party.

Despite the rules on social distancing and non-essential travel, the men were seen in Old Colwyn on Saturday night before officers split them up and made sure they left in different directions.

North Wales Alliance Armed Policing unit wrote on Twitter: "How to attract attention: Driving a car, 4 young males on board returning from a party in Colwyn Bay."

They said the driver was arrested for driving while disqualified and the other occupants were warned about social distancing.

The Roads Policing Unit, which was also involved in the incident, wrote on Twitter: "Vehicle carrying four people and driver did not have licence or insurance. Vehicle seized.  ref DP
