Poles over the rooftops
« Reply #35 on: July 13, 2011, 04:51:12 am »
I was studying this old scene of Mostyn Street and noticed, upper right of the picture, two poles with possibly wires/cables coming from them.

Does anyone know what they were used for and where, exactly they were located?

I was thinking they may have been telegraph poles? They seem quite tall and look like they are rising from one of the rooftops behind Mostyn Street.

The photo was taken some time shortly after 1907 as one of the original trams is pictured. Also, what is today Burtons was Liptons at that time.

I wonder if it could be a tall ship on the back of the lifeboat trailer.  $donald$

Was the Liptons building demolished then?
Because the Burton building was built in 1934.

I wondered for a second where you had got that date from - then I realised you had been looking at the plaques set into the marble under the windows at each side of the building. 1934 was when the original Liptons building was remodelled to create the Burtons building - the ground floor was completely rebuilt and the facade altered to remove the top floor windows and replace them with a cornice with the Burtons logo in the centre.

The original Liptons wasn't remodeled. It was Burtons that was remodelled......Burton & Son Dispensing Chemists.

Have you got a date for that photo? The clothing on the people looks a lot older than 1930s - maybe Burtons Chemist was on the corner first, then they sold out to Liptons, who then sold out to Burtons Tailors?

It was taken in 1899.
