MARK Cavendish has confirmed he will race in the Tour of Britain, which takes to the streets of Gwynedd and Conwy next month.

The sprinter, fresh from equalling Eddy Merckx’s record of 34 Tour de France stage wins after four more victories this summer, will lead the Deceuninck-Quick-Step team at the event, which takes take place from September 5 to 12.

British Cycling has confirmed the fourth stage of its eight-stage flagship series will be held between Ceredigion and Llandudno - the 215km route will be the Tour of Britain’s Queen stage, deemed to be the hardest of the series, with the 9.8 per cent average climb to the finishing line at the top of the Great Orme on September 8.

Cavendish has won more stages of the modern Tour of Britain – 10 – than any other rider. This will be the 12th time he has competed in the race, having led it for two days during the 2007 edition.

“It is always an honour to race on the home roads of the Tour of Britain,” Cavendish said.

A MEMBER of the organising team behind the Tour of Britain cycling event has spoken of his excitement that the series will be returning to Llandudno and other parts of North Wales this year.

Peter Hodges, PR and marketing director at SweetSpot Group, believes that the fourth of this year’s eight stages, which encompasses Llandudno and finishes with a steep climb to the top of the Great Orme, will make for one of the race’s most spectacular scenes.

On Wednesday, September 8, competitors will ride more than 200 km from Aberaeron to Llandudno, before ending with the 1.9km, 9.8 per cent average climb to the finishing line at the top of the Great Orme in Llandudno.

Peter, who considers this the hardest stage at this year’s event, is delighted the Tour of Britain is returning to North Wales and Llandudno for the first time since 2016 and 2014 respectively, with a challenging route that has been in the pipeline for almost two years.

He said: “We’re delighted to be coming back. This was originally the route and stage that should have took place in 2020; effectively, we have been working on this since late 2019.

“The team at Conwy and Llandudno know us really well, and I think it’s fair to say we have long harboured the ambition of finishing at the Great Orme.

“It’s definitely going to be special. I’m an amateur cyclist, but I tend to stick to the flatter routes – I’ll be at the front, looking towards the world’s best doing it,” he laughed.

French star and reigning UCI road world champion Julian Alaphilippe will return to the Tour of Britain next month for the first time since winning the UK’s leading race in 2018.

Alaphilippe will lead the Belgian Deceuninck – Quick-Step team in the Tour of Britain alongside home favourite Mark Cavendish, whose participation in the eight-day race (Sunday 5-12 September) was announced earlier this month.

One of the most loved riders in the peloton today, Alaphilippe has a perfect record in the Tour, having claimed the race’s overall title in his sole participation in the event to date. He also won stage three of the 2018 Tour in Bristol, a victory that sits alongside six Tour de France stage victories and successes in prestigious one-day races such as Milan – Sanremo, Flèche Wallonne and Strade Bianche. By virtue of his victory in the UCI World Championships in Imola last year, Alaphilippe will be easily recognisable to the many spectators who line the route owing to the historic rainbow jersey that he is entitled to wear.

OLYMPIC silver medallist and recent Tour of Norway winner Ethan Hayter, alongside former world champion Michal Kwiatkowski, will lead INEOS Grenadiers at this year’s Tour of Britain.

Silver in the Madison at Toyko 2020 was one of a number of fine performances that the London-born rider has produced this year: he has won stages and finished in the top 10 overall in four of the five stage races he has started to date in 2021, capped off by a flawless performance in the four-day Tour of Norway on Sunday.

THE winner of this year’s AJ Bell Tour of Britain fourth stage, which finishes at the top of the Great Orme in Llandudno, will be taking home a special goat this September.

But it won’t be one of the real-life residents of the Great Orme, which became famous during lockdown.

Instead, race organisers are teaming up with St David’s Hospice, which offers free palliative care to adult patients across North West Wales, to provide the winner of and race leader following stage four on Wednesday, September 8 with a limited edition goat soft toy, called Mostyn.

Adrian Owen, Conwy community fundraiser at St David’s, said: “Thank you so much to the Tour of Britain for both visiting Llandudno and supporting the fantastic work of St David’s Hospice.

“We are proud to be awarding both the stage winner and tour leader one of our fantastic Great Orme goat toys at the end of the stage, and hope many spectators will come along to enjoy the race as it passes the hospice on Abbey Road and visit our stall at the Tour Village on the summit of the Great Orme.”

Seeing as how everyone in Abbey Road have had notices to remove their cars from the street, or they will be towed away, it doesn't seem to be mentioned on the list. People with no alternative parking places than the street are getting stuck for where to put their cars as the designated areas won't hold the volume of cars, especially if there are visitors who have been there overnight. I imagine there will be a few dumped on Bodafon fields by CCBC by the end of the event.

What a cheek ... will the organisers be willing to pay your costs in recovering your car, and for any possible damage to the vehicle?

We thought that--we have an automatic and my OH reckons that a rear wheel car or an automatic would be damaged if the towing people don't know what they are doing. We shall see ! it won't be on the road anyway !!!

My car is front-wheel-drive but they wouldn't be able to release the rear brakes if they were to do a suspended tow - there is no handbrake, it's electronic - so at best would flatspot the rear tyres (at over £200 each!) and damage the discs.

What I think is wrong (downright rude) is saying your car will be towed away - yet legally parked.

It appears that if we can get to (or walk back from, which neither of us can ) we can park in either of the two car parks on a first come first served basis by placing the sign in the window. Is this free? It doesn't say !!

If all the residents parked bumper to bumper with the end cars facing into the row it could make life difficult for the tow team!
