Cambrian Rally 2021
« on: December 23, 2020, 11:52:48 am »
Final race of British Rally Championship 2021 to take place in Llandudno

THE action-packed British Rally Championship is all set for 2021, with the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally coming to Llandudno on October 30.
The Cambrian Rally will provide the 2021 curtain call - and potentially the championship showdown. With unprecedented support from Conwy Council, this British rallying favourite will use the iconic Wales Rally GB stages, and come October will play host to the crowning of the 2021 British Rally Champion.

Britain’s premier rallying series will feature seven events across the four home nations, with events in Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.

The new-look calendar will once again offer crews in R5 and Rally2 cars in the top-flight as well as R2 and Rally4 cars in the Junior BRC a challenging, action-packed campaign with asphalt and gravel rallies providing seven different and unique challenges.

The 2021 season will begin on a sealed surface for the first time in over 40 years, with a trip to Northern Ireland for the classic Circuit of Ireland. A name synonymous in the world of rallying, the Belfast-based event will play host to the phenomenal, bumpy, challenging Irish roads and unpredictable weather conditions – the perfect BRC curtain raiser.

A MOTOR rally is forecast to provide a much needed boost for tourism businesses if Covid restrictions are eased to allow it to go ahead.

The Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally was originally scheduled to be held on February 20, but has been postponed to October 30 after organisers took the decision to reserve a new date to ensure its continued presence in three major championships.

It means the event has secured its position in the British Rally Championship, the British Trials and Rally Drivers Association Championship, and the Welsh Rally Championship, together with the Association of North Western Car Clubs Championship, ensuring that it could attract entrants from throughout Europe.

A COMMITMENT to making the event net carbon neutral by 2025 has been made by the organisers of the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally.

Through working with other parties involved in preserving the environment in Wales, organisers aim to promote good sustainability practice throughout the planning and delivery of the event as far as is reasonably practical, and to help the event’s partners, clients and suppliers do the same.

THE Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally needs more volunteers to lend their support for the 2021 edition of the popular event.

As always, organisers of the rally are on the lookout for a small army of heroes to help run a safe and successful event.

A spokesperson said: "If you are able to assist in some way, whether it’s at the service park in Llandrillo College Rhos on Sea, the start finish podium in Llandudno or in the forest stages please get in touch.

"The best way is to register is on Rally Stage Team platform, please see link attached then select the Cambrian rally in the events section. Thank you, we look forward to welcoming you in Sunny October."

Taking place in October, the 66th Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally is expected to be the last round of the season of the Motorsport UK British Rally Championship, BTRDA Rally Series, Pirelli Welsh Rally Championship and the ANWCC Championship and is set in the challenging welsh forests.

These forests of North Wales are synonymous with rallying especially the Lombard RAC (now the WRGB) back in the late eighties, with legendary drivers such as Roger Clark, Colin McRae, and Richard Burns.

The Cambrian has been enjoyed by a number of top WRC drivers. In 2009 Mikko Hirvonen was the course car in his works WRC Ford Focus. In the same year Mads Ostberg took the overall win in a WRC Subaru. Mikko Hirvonen also won the Cambrian back in 2000, when he was just 20 years old, in his Subaru Impreza WRC .

Recently, a commitment to making the event nett carbon neutral by 2025 has been made by the organisers.

Through working closely with other parties involved in preserving the environment in Wales, they plan to promote good sustainability practice

THE 66th running of the Cambrian Rally is round the corner with a new route passing through rural Conwy.

The rally again forms one stage of the British Rally Championship, as well as the Pirelli Welsh Stage and ANWCC championships, and the organisers, North Wales Car Club are optimistic that it will prove to be one of the best yet.

They have put together a new route comprising a total of 175 miles and 44 stage miles, with two runs each in Gwydir, Penmachno, and Alwen. The final challenge will be an entirely new Tarmac stage which has only been used before on road rallies.

Joint clerk of the course, Alyn Edwards said he believes it will be a popular race.

“All stages are over six miles and because some sections haven’t been used for the past two or three years they are all in excellent condition,” he said.

The race is again expected to start and finish will again be in Llandudno, with overnight parking for competitors available in the multi-storey facility at the town’s Victoria Centre shopping mall.

The organisers continue to work with Conwy County Borough Council, Llandudno Town Council, the Welsh Government and Llandrillo College.

Rally Guide 1 for the event is now available and further information can be found at www.cambrianrally.co.uk

THE Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally team has confirmed spectators can attend at the highly anticipated race this month.

The organising team at North Wales Car Club have reached an agreement with the Welsh Government and Conwy County Borough Council, NRW and Motorsport UK following drawn-out efforts to plan the event since January.

The 66th running of the race once again forms a stage of the British Rally Championship, as well as the Pirelli Welsh Stage and ANWCC championships, with a new route comprising a total of 175 miles and 44 stage miles. There will be two runs, one passing through Gwydir, Penmachno, and Alwen, with the final challenge an entirely new Tarmac stage only previously used for road rallies.

“To ensure the event went ahead and spectators can attend we have had to devise a track and trace system. However, this remains subject to the Covid situation remaining stable. We must also reiterate that everyone must adhere to any guidelines in place at the time and follow the marshals instructions at all times.”

Social distancing is encouraged when viewing on the stages, should spectators fail to obey the Safety Car or marshals instructions and there are groups of spectators gathering, then the Clerk of the Course may be forced to cancel the stage in order to comply with Covid regulations.

Spectator tickets will be on a pre-sale basis, with spectators able to purchase a vehicle car parking ticket on line via the website. At the car park entrance, in exchange for the ticket they will be given a programme. The ticket will give access to one car park only.

And for those who can’t attend the event, the team have put in place live coverage which will bring the action into their homes.

Julian Porter and Chris Rawes from the WRC and FIA ERC coverage, Killian Duffy and Andy Walsh from Onthepacenote, the Special Stage Rally Review team, and Sideways Media will be broadcasting from every stage end with two full stages live. This is in addition to the British Rally Championship and Pirelli Welsh Rally Championship broadcasting from their channels.

Additionally, media students from Coleg Llandrillo will be broadcasting from the service area throughout the day.

Conwy will once again provide the high octane finale for next year's British Rally Championship.

It will offer the perfect curtain call on the 2022 season, when Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally retains its October slot and rounds out the British Rally Championship in style.

Fans will also have the potential to see the champion crowned on the Llandudno seafront, after the event takes contenders through world-class forest stages in North Wales.

A CLOSE contest between two North Wales drivers for this year’s British Rally Championship will provide an enthralling spectacle at the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally on Saturday.

Currently leading the championship is Machynlleth’s Osian Pryce, who has a 16 point lead over rival and two-time British champion Matt Edwards, from Colwyn Bay, looking for a third successive British Championship title.

Both men will be competing in Volkswagon Polo GTI R5 cars in the race, which starts and finishes on Llandudno promenade, with routes passing through Gwydir, Penmachno, and Alwen

After Edwards suffered a blip, which caused him to lose significant time on the two opening stages of the event, Pryce topped the BRC leaderboard at the recent Mull Rally in Scotland, with Edwards showing tremendous grit and determination to fight his way back into second place.

On his home rally, with the action taking place in the forests of Conwy county, Edwards will be going all out for victory and plans to play his bonus points Joker.

The Cambrian also hosts the penultimate round of the British Trials and Rally Drivers Association Championship which is being equally closely contested, with George Lepley from Newark, holding a slender lead over the recently crowned Scottish Rally champion, Garry Pearson, and rival Ian Bainbridge. The same three drivers are also in close contention to win the Pirelli Welsh National Rally Championship title with points gained on the Cambrian likely to prove decisive.

Tickets to view the stages, which include car parking, can be booked at www.cambrian rally.co.uk. There will also be live coverage on social media, in addition to broadcasting by the British Rally Championship and Pirelli Welsh Rally Championship.  ref pioneer

The Trailer Park was meant to be on Bodafon Fields but the weather decided otherwise.  Well done to the Council and everyone in West Shore for allowing the sudden change of "car park".  Despite the weather, which stopped raining just after the event started, everyone seems to have enjoyed a cracking event.  Thanks for all the support the club and event gets from Conwy CBC and the Llandudno Town Council.

136 crews started the event with 84 classified as finishers.

OSIAN Pryce won the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally for the first time in his Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 to maintain his lead in the British Rally Championship with just one round remaining.

The result also continues his incredible record of finishing on the BRC podium in every round so far this year, with his success tally now standing at two maximum points scores, second on the Grampian Rally and Trackrod Rally Yorkshire and third on both the Neil Howard and Nicky Grist Stages.

Machynlleth-based Pryce leads the BRC drivers’ standings by eight points ahead of the final round, the Ulster Rally on Saturday, November 20.

Pryce started the Cambrian Rally at a blistering pace, taking an incredible 10 second lead on the opening 5.93-mile Gwydir stage in his Melvyn Evans Motorsport machine.
