FESTIVE finds will be on offer at the Welsh Mountain Zoo this December.                            ref Pioneer

The attraction in Colwyn Bay has revealed its plans for half price entry throughout the festive month

The zoo will also be hosting its Christmas trail for visitors both young and older.

Marcia Azevedo Moreira, Marketing Manager at the Welsh Mountain Zoo, said: “With such a difficult 2020 and with Wales only recently coming out of a second lockdown, we wanted to inject some early Christmas love and offer half price entry through December.

"Unfortunately this year we won’t be able to showcase our grotty grotto or host events that encourage interaction but we will welcome friends old and new, who can enjoy a wrapped up walk around our wonderful zoo to reacquaint themselves with our much loved animals."

TWO zoo keepers have written a children's book to raise funds for their much loved attraction.

Welsh Mountain Zoo keepers Amy Ridgway and Tom Wootton have published 'A Dream Day at the Zoo'.

Born out of a desire to support the zoo in the face of escalating financial pressures during the pandemic, 90 per cent of the profits from the sale of this book will go directly to the zoo. The other 10 per cent is going to The Vulture Conservation Foundation.

The story focuses on a young girl named Alice, a keen animal lover.

On a seemingly normal visit, Alice begins to daydream, and her adventure begins as she’s called to help keepers trace an escaped animal by following the clues and trying to work out what species the animal is.

“We wrote the book and drafted basic illustrations, almost like a story-board to pitch the book to our directors.

"These illustrations were then sent over to Catherine Jackman  https://www.facebook.com/CatherineJackmanArt/ and she elevated them beautifully. The response so far has been amazing – the first batch has sold out and we're already on our second reprint."

The book is on sale at the zoo shop at a £6 or £10 with a cute chimp soft toy. Alternatively call 01492 532938 order.

A ZOO’s ability to welcome back customers has been described as ‘amazing’ but there is a “long road ahead” to return to normal.

The frank admission was made by Welsh Mountain Zoo director of operations and administration Jen Jesse, as the attraction was allowed to welcome to its first visitors back on Monday, April 26.

The site has been closed since December in-line with Covid restrictions.

Ms Jesse said: “We were delighted to be able to welcome our first visitors back to the zoo since our closure.

“There is no doubt that these past months have been challenging and there is a long road ahead of us. However, to see the smiling faces of visitors arriving through our gates on Monday was so pleasing for the whole team.

“Our friends and supporters have been truly amazing throughout this period and we are so humbled by the efforts they have gone to, to support us. We also thank two grant-giving charities and Welsh Government for their funding support.

THE Welsh Mountain Zoo has now completed its ambitious £1million redevelopment of the snow leopard’s new enclosure, ‘Silk Road’.

‘Silk Road’ recreates the mountainous regions in which the vulnerable species lives in the wild.

The snow leopard enclosure has been designed to offer visitors a nose-to-nose visual experience through glass, whilst an elevated walkway journeys around the site, offering panoramic views across the zoo, located in Colwyn Bay, and the surrounding Carneddau Mountains.

Jen Jesse, director of Operations and Administration, said: “It’s wonderful to finally see this fantastic space completed and the snow leopards firmly settled in.

"Our keeping team did an excellent job in ensuring that the move went smoothly and after a period of familiarisation with their new surroundings, the pair were given access to the main enclosure and have since been exploring their new home.

“The Silk Road is an important chapter in the 58-year history of the Zoo. This new enclosure will add something totally different and unique to visitors, both new and returning.”

THE Welsh Mountain Zoo has revealed its glittering Christmas itinerary with a wealth of festive activities, as well as half price entry, to help celebrate the most wonderful time of the year.

Plans include the Reindeer Roundup trail where young visitors are invited to help Santa round up his reindeer by solving animal-themed riddles.

Children's Winter tale storytelling, hosted by Conwy libraries, will take place in the WILD Centre on December 23 throughout the day, beginning at 10am and finishing at 3pm. Christmas Crafts will also be open to all, every day between December 18 and 22 and December 24, between 10am -12pm.

For the first time ever, the Colwyn Bay attraction will be hosting its Winter Wasteland, their take on the classic winter wonderland, but now made out of recycled materials. This magical winter wasteland made from recycled products, can be explored outside the WILD Centre and inside the Media Centre.

The grounds will also be filled with tree-strung fairy lights, creating an enchanted exciting festive atmosphere for all to enjoy.

Charlotte Dykes, marketing manager of the Welsh Mountain Zoo, said: “Each year, we try to introduce something new over the festive season for our visitors to enjoy. This year is no exception with our storytelling sessions, crafts and ‘Winter Wasteland,’ where we’ve recreated an amazing ‘wonderland’ crafted from reused objects gathered from across the zoo grounds.

"The zoo is also spreading some winter magic with the offer of half-price tickets during the Christmas period. All visitors can enjoy half price entry from December 11 to January 9.

“Christmas is a perfect time to visit the zoo and can be a tradition for many of our visitors.

"We look forward to welcoming zoo lovers from both our community and further afield, as we kickstart our festivities this December right through to January.”

The Welsh Mountain Zoo is open every day from 9.30am – 3.30pm during this time, only closing for Christmas Day.

An education and skills centre planned at the Welsh Mountain Zoo has been further delayed due to Covid.

Now the National Zoological Society of Wales has applied to Conwy County Council?s planning committee for an extension on the original planning application, which was granted in December 2017.

The skills centre has been on the cards for more than ten years and was subject to a judicial review after initial planning consent was granted in April 2015.

But pandemic restrictions have further slowed progress, and the zoo has applied for an extension to the five-year agreement and some of its conditions, which must be met before construction starts.

The planning application submitted in December 2017 includes plans for a new alligator beach and tropical area with seven reptile exhibits, butterfly exhibit and six species exhibits.

The plans also included a plant exhibit, two lecture rooms, two classrooms, WCs, service rooms, including ?off show? planting, reptile and insect rooms, two offices, keeper?s store, kitchen, mess and plant room.

As part of the plans, the existing alligator beach building would be retained and converted into a pump house and butterfly exhibit. The pavilion on the southern boundary wall and the gateway and pillars to the northern boundary would also be retained.

Whilst a new gated opening was proposed in the western boundary wall, the northern stone steps would be relocated to replace the altered southern steps and provide access to an external sensory garden.

The Welsh Mountain Zoo plans to improve its access for disabled people and those with mobility problems. Neil Morris, of the National Zoological Society of Wales, has applied to Conwy County Council?s planning department, seeking permission for a new boardwalk.

If the application is granted, a new access boardwalk will be built adjacent to the tigers and red squirrels, in lieu of the existing steps. In a letter to the council, a spokesman for the zoo said: "The zoo premises, being a hillside site, presents some degree of challenges for access around the site for disabled persons or people with some degree of mobility impairment.

UK weather: Conwy zoo uses novel ways to keep animals warm

Warm cooked potatoes, hot juice and even a simple cwtch - or cuddle - are some of the approaches being used to keep animals warm at a Welsh zoo.

As temperatures drop, people are wrapping up in scarves and gloves amid a number of yellow weather warnings across the UK.

Keepers at the Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay, Conwy, have been concerned about the effect on its animals.

It has brought in a number of special measures to ensure they are kept warm.

The chimps are chomping on warm cooked potatoes, whilst the Macaws are slurping warm juice and other animals are simply cuddling up to each other.

Rare photos as Welsh Mountain Zoo marks 60th anniversary

AHEAD of the Welsh Mountain Zoo's 60th anniversary, we are taking a stroll down memory lane.

The zoo in Colwyn Bay has grown to become one of North Wales? most loved tourist attractions. The site welcomes on average 170,000 visitors a year and homes more than 80 species.

The story of the zoo began in 1962 when Robert Jackson, his wife Margaret and their three sons, moved from their home in Cheshire to Colwyn Bay and, through the coldest winter in living memory, began building what he named the ?Welsh Mountain Zoo and Botanic Gardens.'

A MUCH-loved zoo is currently hiring volunteers to take photos and help in their lemur walkthrough.

The Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay has more than 30 volunteers who work across five departments including marketing [which involves photography and videography], education [based on public engagement and formal education such as school workshops], gardening, animal walk-throughs and animal keepers which broadly includes care across all sections of the zoo.

The attraction is now looking for volunteers for the summer season.
