Not quite covid news, but I suppose a bit of good news for the country...............

Nissan backs UK plant but protests erupt in Spain.

The pandemic added yet more pressure on the company to step up its cost-cutting efforts. On Thursday the company said it was too difficult to forecast its performance in the next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Uchida said that the firm's key focus during the pandemic was now to "pursue steady growth", instead of the massive sales expansion it pursued in the past.

Press briefing begins.........

First Minister announces changes to lockdown

The First Minister Mark Drakeford has announced the changes to lockdown measures in Wales.

The changes
From next Monday, people from two different households will be able to meet up as long as they are outdoors, maintain social distancing, and follow hand-washing advice.

That five mile guidance - and Mr Drakeford stresses guidance, not regulation - will have to be applied carefully and sensibly by "people using their own judgement" in the different geography of Wales.

Mr Drakeford seems to be suggesting the guidance will be more flexible for more rural areas.

This strikes me as contradictory ........... So after months of "shielding" it is considered safe for the carer, to meet others.

On the people who are shielding
Mr Drakeford said: "We have asked people to shield until the middle of June. We hope to be in a position in the second half of next week for the Chief Medical Officer giving them advice going forward.

"We are very aware of the struggles these people are going through.
"They have not been forgotten and remain part of our thinking."
12:56pm

and a bit later........
On living with people on the shielding list
He said: "People living with people on the shielding list are allowed to go out and meet other households under the new guidance. "

Mr Drakeford said they are continuing the guidance they have given to people in that situation.

"You would expect that person would think very carefully about they act," he said.
"It's not an invitation, we are not asking people to go out and meet other people.
"Please think about it, and the risks of meeting up.
"It remains the safest way to contact loved ones via telephone.

"This is for the next three weeks, and if we can do this well, we will have the headroom to ease the lockdown further.
"If everyone follows the guidance properly, we can do more for people who are not able to do things under Monday's guidance.

I think a large percentage of the population of Wales were already ahead of the latest relaxation of rules and have been for a few weeks. Maybe the way forward it to set new boundaries in small steps and let the population push them a little further, that way it keeps a tighter control on things.

Why, with a fabulous weather forecast, do the new rules about meeting your family and friends in an open space not take place from tomorrow?

The Welsh government has announced plans to relax restrictions affecting around 130,000 people in Wales being shielded from coronavirus.

As of tomorrow, the affected group will be From this date, people who have been shielding will be able to exercise outdoors and meet people from another household.

But, as before, they should not go into other people's homes or share food with them.

Promote health. Save lives. Serve the vulnerable. Visit who.int
All other previous advice also remains in place.

The move comes after the announcement of similar easing of measures in England.

Concern has been voiced that the lockdown restrictions the UK government has taken the lead on relaxing are being scaled back too soon.

Shielded individuals should not go shopping or attend work outside of home, and should continue to have food and medicine delivered to them.           ( I have a funny idea they will not be going anywhere )

Health minister to give latest Welsh Government Covid-19 update.

13:25
Winter lockdown could be on cards to combat indoor spread of coronavirus
Health minister Vaughan Gething today warned that Wales could face a lockdown in the winter months if the coronavirus situation deteriorates.

He told a press conference this lunchtime that the government might look to reintroduce some lockdown measures.
The admission came days after the Welsh government announced the easing of restrictions in Wales.

13:17SARAH
Coronavirus will be with us for months
Mr Gething says if we allow the virus to return it will do more significant harm.
He says he has seen pictures of beaches in England and it is down to people to make the right decisions.

Mr Gething says the choices people have made in Wales have helped relax restictions here and will impact on further decisions.
He adds that coronavirus will be with us for some time yet.

12:56
Review period
Mr Gething says they are still sticking to a three week review period. It comes after Matt Hanock announced England would move to a 28-day period from a 21-day period.

It seems that the UK's own statistics office is losing patience with Matt Hancock.

ALMOST 130,000 people will this week start receiving a letter from the Chief Medical Officer for Wales setting out the latest advice to protect them from coronavirus.

They will be asked to continue shielding until August 16, but the letter will also describe how the medical advice has changed to enable them to go outdoors to meet other people for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

The shielded group are people who are classed as extremely vulnerable to developing serious illness if they contract coronavirus because they have a specific health condition.

How did we manage to go from one of the hottest spots to one of the least affected virtually overnight?

Doctors have urged the government to make face coverings compulsory in all places where social distancing is not possible, not just on public transport.

All passengers on public transport in England must wear a covering from 15 June, the government said on Thursday.

But the British Medical Association, the doctors' union, said masks "should not be restricted" to transport.

It also said the risk from coronavirus would be "much less" if the rule started now, not later in the month.

Face coverings - which can be homemade - must be worn on buses, trams, trains, coaches, aircraft and ferries.

Passengers will not be allowed to travel without one, and if they do not wear one they could be fined.

Exactly... playing with figures to make them suit the need.
