Four pieces of news..........................

Two thirds of doctors surveyed 'don't feel fully protected'
The British Medical Association has published the results of a survey of 835 doctors in Wales which suggests that 67% of respondents do not feel fully protected from coronavirus at work.

Sixty percent said they'd had to purchase items of personal protective equipment (PPE) directly, or had received supplies as an external donation due to non-availability of official NHS procurement supplies.

Dr David Bailey, chair of BMA Cymru Wales, said: “The survey shows that, overall, there has been an improvement in the provision of PPE, but there’s clearly still a lot for the Welsh Government and employers to do to reassure staff. We are calling on Welsh Government to be transparent about supplies."

On Friday, Wales' Chief Medical Officer Dr Frank Atherton said 70 million items of PPE had been issued had been issued during the pandemic

Welsh Government response to BMA survey
Earlier we reported on the British Medical Association's survey of 835 doctors in Wales which suggests that 67% of respondents do not feel fully protected from coronavirus at work.

Sixty per cent said they'd had to purchase items of personal protective equipment (PPE) directly, or had received supplies as an external donation due to non-availability of official NHS procurement supplies.

The Welsh Government says there is a "huge amount" of work going on in Wales to secure sufficient supplies of PPE for front-line health and care workers.

"In the last week, 660,000 fluid-resistant gowns and 10 million masks arrived in Wales – items which have been under pressure.

“Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve issued more than 70 million items of PPE to the NHS and social care settings in Wales...

"The demand for PPE will continue to be high for the foreseeable future, but health and care workers can be reassured we are working hard to make sure there’s a continued supply to all those who need it.”

PPE flight arrives in the UK     ref Pioneer
A passenger plane has landed in the UK with 10 million pairs of surgical gloves for the NHS.

The Airbus A340, with “Thank You NHS” written on its fuselage, arrived at Bournemouth Airport after picking up the supplies from Kuala Lumpur.

The gloves then passed to NHS supplier Crest Medical, based in Warrington, which commissioned the delivery.

The flight is the second to land at the airport with NHS supplies, after 120,000 surgical gowns were brought from China, on Tuesday. Two flights landed at Cardiff Airport this week too with more vital PPE equipment.

This piece sound like closing the gate, after the horse has bolted..........
The UK government's Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said he is "actively looking" at quarantining people entering the UK once travel restrictions are lifted in order to prevent any further spread of coronavirus.

He added the decision to not do this earlier was backed by the scientific advice at the time and allowed millions of people to return home and be with their families.

New restrictions would aim to keep infection rates under control and ensure visitors match the same social distancing rules currently being followed by the public.              REF BBC

Woman cuts hole in face mask so that it’s easier to breathe

We are expecting more guidance this week on whether or not we should be wearing face masks to protect ourselves or other people from coronavirus. Under current guidelines, people are not advised to wear them unless they have symptoms of Covid-19 or are treating a patient. However, there have been calls for this to be changed, with evidence in some countries suggesting they can act as a defence against catching the virus when out and about. If the new advice is that we should be wearing them when we’re out and about it’s probably a good idea not to take a leaf out of this woman’s book. She was filmed going into a shop with a hole cut out of her mask and, when asked where she got it from, she responded that it makes it a lot easier to breathe. It’s probably worth pointing out that it makes the mask completely useless.

Coronavirus: Can 'excess deaths' figures show pandemic's true extent?

BBC Wales' Social Affairs Correspondent Daniel Davies looks at whether the country's 'excess deaths' figures could help show the true extent of the pandemic.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-52523082

A Facebook post compared the deaths recorded by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) so far in 2020 with the deaths in 2018. Some readers have asked us to look into this as well.

The Facebook post says that “UK currently to date including today 22 April has exactly 2,760 ‘LESS’ deaths than the exact same period weeks 1-15 in 2018”. The user said that the data came from the website of the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Claim
There were fewer deaths recorded in the first 15 weeks of 2020 than in the first 15 weeks of 2018.

Conclusion
Correct, although the number of deaths in recent weeks far exceeds the number at the same point in any recent year.

MORE than 20,000 people have been added to the Welsh Shielded Patient list, it has been announced.

Following a refinement of the medical criteria for shielding, and in line with the other three nations, the Chief Medical Officer for Wales will this week send letters to further high risk patients advising them to shield.

Vaughan Gething, Minister for Health and Social Services, said: "The majority of these patients are within the high-risk categories already identified and have been identified as a result of updated searches of our secondary care systems.

"In addition to these groups the four UK Chief Medical Officers recently agreed that all those on kidney dialysis should be advised to shield.

"As a result, approximately 21,000 patients have been added to the Welsh Shielded Patient List (taking the number advised to shield in Wales to approximately 121,000).

"Updated searches of our primary care system are still being conducted centrally and may identify further patients.

North Wales 'behind the virus trend'
A members of the Senedd (MS) says he is concerned Covid-19 is spreading in north Wales at a different rate to other parts of Wales and the UK.

Darren Millar, the Conservative member for Clwyd West, said: "I still get the impression that we're two or three weeks behind the curve in north Wales as far as the spread of the virus is concerned.

"The overall picture is complicated, but if you just look at hospital figures alone, it's clear that north Wales is behind the UK and the Wales-wide trend."

He said he would not support a regional approach to lifting lockdown restrictions, either in Wales, or in the UK as a whole.

"I represent a tourism area, and the minute you open up any part of England or Wales, you'll get more people wanting to come and visit," Mr Millar said.

"We need tourism to bounce back, and bounce back well, but it's still early days in the coronavirus outbreak for us here in north Wales.

"Getting the timing wrong will threaten both residents, tourism businesses and the visitors themselves. It shows how any suggestion of a regional difference in lockdown is risky."   ref BBC

I am losing what little confidence I have left, in our decision makers, they do not seem capable of dealing with the easy tasks, equipment, PPE and testing procedures, surely this country can deal with this, we have had three months to make arrangements.

The government has admitted sending about 50,000 coronavirus tests to the US last week for processing after "operational issues" in UK labs.

The Department of Health said sending swabs abroad are among the contingencies to deal with "teething problems".

The samples were airlifted to the US in chartered flights from Stansted Airport, the Sunday Telegraph said.

A NEW Public Health Wales testing laboratory has opened in Rhyl.

It is hoped the new centre will help prevent delays for people waiting to get results back.

Darren Millar, Clwyd West Members of the Senedd (MS), said: “It is great news that this laboratory is now up and running in Rhyl to serve the people of North Wales and that they will no longer have to wait for test samples to be transported to Cardiff.

The last thing Wales needs is a culture of people being shamed because they are not wearing masks, Wales’ chief medical officer has said.

Wales is the only UK nation that has not recommended the use of face coverings.

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales Breakfast with Claire Summers, Dr Frank Atherton said the benefits of face masks had been potentially “somewhat oversold” and there were downsides as well as some “practical drawbacks”.

One of those was that he did not want to create a “culture of mistrust”.

“The last thing I think we need in Wales is kind of mask shaming, you know, because somebody hasn't got a mask," Dr Atherton said.

“We have to focus on basic hygiene, on the social distancing measures, not touching our face when we can avoid it, and keeping our distance," he added.

“Those are the things that can make a difference, not relying on compulsory use of face masks.”

Dr Atherton said people who have symptoms “shouldn’t feel that they can put on a face mask and go about their business going to a supermarket", saying they should be self-isolating to avoid putting others at risk.                            ref BBC

Huge queues outside recycling centres as hundreds flock to dump rubbish
Tips in Wrexham opened for the first time since lockdown today.

Hundreds of people queued in their cars outside recycling centres today as some opened for the first time since the lockdown.

The three waste tips in Wrexham are the first in North Wales to reopen under a modest relaxing of lockdown rules by the Welsh Government.

One motorist queuing to enter, with its boot left open, had several mattresses stacked on the roof of their car, with a sofa taking up the back seats

On Friday the front page of the Daily Mirror said " 19M Brits have had the virus and recovered"    that was according to experts at Manchester University.         The figures were revealed as Health Chiefs approved a "game changer"    100% accurate antibody check which would show who has already had the virus.
It could help millions return to work and ease the lockdown

It was only by accident that I read that it's now permissible to go angling again provided you stay local. You can use your car to get there too. I knew golf courses were allowed to open from tomorrow is there anything else I have missed?
