Re: Conwy landlord Mark Thorogood ordered to repay record housing benefit sum

Mr Thorogood, who refers to himself as "the Pied Piper of Llandudno", has been ordered to repay nearly £50,000
A landlord who once referred to himself as the “Pied Piper of Llandudno ” has been ordered to repay a record amount of housing benefit.
I noticed the other day that several of what I believe to be his properties in Bodhyfryd Road are now boarded up.

I've just had a phone call from my brother who said that the Marine Drive in Llandudno is closed at the West Shore end as there has been a land slide in that area.
Traffic is now a two way system from the Marine Drive and Llys Helyg Drive to the zig zag's by St Tudno's Church

Can you clarify that a bit more Hugo? We have been in touch with the Wirral to Llandudno Mini Club organisers, who in turn have been in touch with Conwy CBC. Conwy reckon that whatever will be a 3 day job, so their usual trip round the Orme will go ahead. It is due to be held on Sun. Jan 10th.

Hi Nemesis,   all I can tell you is what my brother told me when I phoned him.    He was working on the old Railway Convalescent home just on the entrance to Llys Helyg Drive but was unable to drive there because of a rockfall which I would think is between the Toll House and St Petrocks where they have had other landslides.
To get to the old Railway Convalescent home he drove along the Marine Drive past the lighthouse to Llys Helyg Drive and then he would have had to return the same way.
Other cars came towards him travelling up the one way system so he had to drive carefully as he was going down.
I've not heard from him since and couldn't see anything about the rock fall in the Daily Post web page so I can't tell you any more than that I'm afraid.

Nemesis I went to the West Shore today and the Marine Drive is closed to vehicles and pedestrians but I was able to walk to the rock fall. The first one is only a small fall but the one near St Petrocks has a lot of large boulders there.
The road is closed until further notice but they are expecting heavy machinery there very soon.    I suppose that clearance of the rocks etc is only part of the work as they will have to make sure that the rest of the cliff is stable

Thanks Hugo, we have been in contact with the Wirral Mini Club and also Conwy CBC, who are assuring everyone that all will be open by Sunday. I only hope that this will be correct as there are usually over 100 Minis and any diversion of route will be difficult to implicate. We hope to be there to spectate ( we have a Morris Minor now, so are n't eligible to join in !) if we ever get straight from a decorating episode ! :o

■ By DAVID POWELL Daily Post Reporter david.powell@trinitymirror.com
TWENTY criminals including murderers and arsonists have been granted unescorted leave in the last three years from the secure unit from which vicar killer Richard Dennick absconded.

The patients were all residents at Tŷ Llywelyn in Llanfairfechan from which Dennick, 48, went missing in September after being allowed out alone. He handed himself in 24 hours later in London.

In an answer to a Freedom of Information Act request, Betsi Cadwaladar University Health Board said: “We can advise that over the past three financial years a total of 20 patients were granted unescorted leave.”

But the health board was initially reluctant to divulge their crimes, citing confidentiality. The Daily Post appealed against that decision and BCUHB then “reviewed” the situation and came out with more information.

The FOI answer stated: “All patients would have commenced unescorted leave for the shortest period. Of these patients, there was a range of offences identified including arson, assault, actual bodily harm, wounding, attempted murder and murder.

“Those who would have had longest period unescorted leave are those that were discharged into the community. Those convictions included arson, assault, wounding, actual bodily harm and attempted murder. All periods are approved by the Ministry of Justice.”

They revealed “unescorted leave” means patients are “initially in hospital grounds” for “short timed periods”. This is then extended to the “local village and wider community”.

When Dennick (left) went missing and his murderous past was revealed by police the day after his disappearance, there was an outcry that such patients were allowed out on their own. Police said at the time Dennick was without his medication and could become unpredictable.

A special liaison committee was set up in the wake of the incident to try to alleviate the community’s concerns.

It is understood Dennick remains at the unit, but it is not known if he is still allowed out on unaccompanied leave.

Sorry, but this event planned locally in August does not sit well with me.

Being negative only makes a difficult journey more difficult. You may have been given a cactus, but you don't have to sit on it.

It reminds me of the time when I used to play football.    Phil Jones had seven pints before one game and scored seven goals, all with his head.
I just had a couple but didn't score any, perhaps I was drinking the wrong stuff.         Z**

I must admit the  option of "run, walk or crawl" does suggest the intention should be to drink yourself stupid. However, the idea of a walk to sample the wine is not a bad one at all. I have been several times to one in Germany which involves a 22km walk through the vineyards where the wine is produced sampling at one of around 10 stations along the route. It's a great family event, some complete the whole walk as I have done, others just sample a small section. There are thousands of people take part for this annual festival. You get a card that can be stamped and if you get a certain number of stamps from the different stations you qualify for a free raffle draw with some excellent locally donated prizes.
I think something similar would be a terrific idea here as well. Maybe an opportunity to sample food and drink. We have local beer which to my mind is more appropriate than wine.
Incidentally, the measure of wine on the German walk is not a full glass although you can buy by the bottle if you so wish.
