A CRASH on the A55 killed a man, and left three others seriously injured – closing the westbound lanes for nine hours.
The smash between a Mitsubishi Shogun and a white Renault Master van happened at 4am yesterday morning on an un-lit stretch between the junctions for Abergwyngregyn and Tal-y-bont, near Bangor.
Police, firefighters and paramedics raced to the crash scene, with cutting equipment used to free the casualties.
A helicopter crew from 22 Squadron Search and Rescue at RAF Valley was also called to assist with a search of the area and to provide lighting from flares.
One man, the passenger in the Shogun, was later pronounced dead and three others are being treated at Ysbyty Gwynedd. The deceased is not thought to be from North Wales.
Acting Chief Superintendent Andy Jenks-Gilbert said police had arrested a 27-year-old man in the Deeside area, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Traffic officers closed the A55 in the westbound direction at Llanfairfechan (Junction 15), while the vehicles were removed and an investigation launched.
Vehicles heading west towards Bangor were diverted, off the expressway onto the A470 at Llandudno Junction.
This saw cars clogging Llanrwst and Betws-y-Coed on the hour-long, 40-mile diversion to rejoin the A55 at Bangor.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said that crews from Llanfairfechan and Bangor went to the scene along with the Technical Rescue Unit in Caernarfon.
They assisted in removing the casualties from the vehicles.
Police said they were appealing for information after the crash.
Anyone with information is asked to call North Wales Police on 101.
