They may have used the RAF helicopter because it can transport more than one casualty at a time.

A CRASH on the A55 killed a man, and left three others seriously injured – closing the westbound lanes for nine hours.

The smash between a Mitsubishi Shogun and a white Renault Master van happened at 4am yesterday morning on an un-lit stretch between the junctions for Abergwyngregyn and Tal-y-bont, near Bangor.

Police, firefighters and paramedics raced to the crash scene, with cutting equipment used to free the casualties.

A helicopter crew from 22 Squadron Search and Rescue at RAF Valley was also called to assist with a search of the area and to provide lighting from flares.

One man, the passenger in the Shogun, was later pronounced dead and three others are being treated at Ysbyty Gwynedd. The deceased is not thought to be from North Wales.

Acting Chief Superintendent Andy Jenks-Gilbert said police had arrested a 27-year-old man in the Deeside area, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Traffic officers closed the A55 in the westbound direction at Llanfairfechan (Junction 15), while the vehicles were removed and an investigation launched.

Vehicles heading west towards Bangor were diverted, off the expressway onto the A470 at Llandudno Junction.

This saw cars clogging Llanrwst and Betws-y-Coed on the hour-long, 40-mile diversion to rejoin the A55 at Bangor.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said that crews from Llanfairfechan and Bangor went to the scene along with the Technical Rescue Unit in Caernarfon.

They assisted in removing the casualties from the vehicles.

Police said they were appealing for information after the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call North Wales Police on 101.

One man killed, three badly hurt in A55 crash in Gwynedd

A man has been arrested in connection with a road crash in which one man died and three people were seriously hurt.

North Wales Police said a 27-year-old man was arrested on Deeside on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A Mitsubishi Shogun and a white Renault Master van were in collision on the westbound carriageway A55 at Abergwyngregin at 04:00 GMT.

The force have asked witnesses to call the force on 101.

A man, not believed to be from north Wales, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three other people are being treated at Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor for serious injuries.

The road was closed westbound for several hours so investigations could take place.

Looks like Llandudno Fire Station will be losing it's turntable ladder. This is from Greg Robbins' facebook page:

Very sorry to report that despite the many letters of objection, the well supported petition and a detailed letter pointing out that the information that they were making there decision on is flawed (which was also sent to the Welsh Audit Office). The Fire Authority have voted to remove the fire Aerial Platform Ladder from Llandudno. Many thanks for all who signed the petition.

In that case, we shall look forward to receiving a statement from the NW Fire Authority explaining the background to their decision.

If the statement does not stack up then our Town Mayor can possibly complain to the Public Ombudsman for Wales on behalf of the residents of Llandudno.

This looks like a case of - bean counters 1 - common sense 0
I think, if there was a major fire in Llandudno and there were injuries or deaths caused by the time getting a platform to the fire. Would the fire service be liable for any compensation claims arising?

You should be asking Why was Conwy only allowed one representative on the fire committee and the other 3 councils allowed 2 representatives. Its no wonder they voted to keep their turntable ladders and voted to get rid of ours.

It reminds me of a phrase I used to say regularly to the Finance Director of a company I worked for.

Not as such no, though I think Dave might be.  ;)
Actually I never knew the quote originated there. Its just something I heard in business.. and I liked it!

It was always a good line to beat the 'beancounters' and 'cost cutting consultants' over the head with.
Also a good way to establish the moral high ground.

If you look at  North Wales Fire Authority website it gives details of the membership.  The Executive Panel which recommended the Llandudno ALP go to Wrexham has 14 members.  It looks as though each of the 6 Councils has 2 members but the Chair and Vice Chair
are also added to the panel.  This means that Denbighshire and the smallest one, Anglesey, both get an additional member each. Not very democratic.
I see David Powell in the Daily Post made the point that the chair, Sharon Frobisher, is from Prestatyn.
