Thomas Cook could fall into administration this weekend unless the travel company finds £200m in extra funds needed to secure its future.

Good news for some...........

Troubled travel firm Thomas Cook says it has agreed a rescue deal with investor Fosun Tourism, its banks and a majority of its bondholders.
The UK tour operator said in July it was working to secure new investment from Fosun, a major shareholder.

The new deal would see the Chinese group take control of the business at the expense of other shareholders.
The plan will result in a significant dilution in existing shareholders' interests,

Detailed BBC article on the collapse.

Thomas Cook has collapsed after last-minute negotiations aimed at saving the 178-year-old holiday firm failed.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the tour operator had "ceased trading with immediate effect".
It has also triggered the biggest ever peacetime repatriation, aimed at bringing more than 150,000 British holidaymakers home.

Commenting as the company entered compulsory liquidation, Mr Fankhauser also apologised to the firm's "millions of customers, and thousands of employees".

The tour operator's failure puts 22,000 jobs at risk worldwide, including 9,000 in the UK.

Went to Bangor to see the original at the Art Gallery there when it was on loan from the Lady Lever Gallery.
I have one of his others 'Market Day in Old Wales'.
Hope Salem stays in Wales.

Thanks Bri for those links,  I remember those times and when they stated that the pension age of men and women were going to be equal I initially thought great, I'll have my OAP at 60 but it didn't happen like that
I do feel sorry for those that have lost out and also for the young people who have to wait longer now before they receive their pension

No problem, Hugo.

Mrs R lost out twice after initially expecting her state pension at aged 60 but seeing the finishing line moved on two occasions.

Then Mrs R missed out on the new increased state pension by being born fifteen days too early leaving her having to defer payment for 12 months in order to boost her pension entitlement.

Hopefully, this Thursday morning may bring her some good news.

I agree our kids will have to wait even longer unless a miracle happens to our UK economy.

My wife broke her leg at Christmas 2010 so we decided she would not go back to work, she was 57 and I was already retired.  We reckoned we could survive reasonably well on my pension and inheritance from my parents not long deceased - I was ex-Hotpoint and getting that pension, with state pension to start in 2014 for me, at age 65.  We thought that she would be getting her pension about the same time when she'd be 60.  However, similar to Mrs Bri she was born just the wrong side of the cut-off date - which changed twice - consequently had to wait until July 2018 to get the pension, when she was only a few months off being 65, but at least she got the enhanced amount.  Fortunately, we have been OK due to inheritances but many others have not been so fortunate.

Here’s an interesting statistic:

The WALES ONLY (ie not including the rest of the UK)  viewing figures for Wales v Australia at the Rugby World Cup:

ITV (English) = 766,000
S4C (Welsh) = 38,381

In other words, 19 out of 20 viewers inside Wales chose to watch the English language coverage.

Bri,  take the statistics with a pinch of salt

The population of Wales is 3,125,000   so if 804,381 people were watching the game  that would mean that 1 in 4 people in our country were all watching the game at the same time.

It was a great game and I enjoyed it very much, but 1 in 4 then I don't think so

Hugo, rest assured I shall keep an open mind.

However, I suspect 804,381 is the total number of TV sets, tablets, mobile phones and other devices capable of receiving the rugby match LIVE rather than the actual number of viewers.
