Mary ann hughes c1876
« on: May 20, 2017, 11:03:33 PM »
hello once again,
i am popping in here to ask other hughes families re a mary ann hughes marrying an Edmund Griffith Thomas (dob 1876 Bangor).
in Llandudno Dec 1900.

Do any of you other Hughes branches perhaps have a mary ann of your lines married to Mr Thomas? so i can either eliminate him or research a little deeper. to the connection.

researching My Mary ann hughes, dob 1876 Llandudno, parents Robert hughes and ann nee owen ( aunt of my grandmother margaret ann pearl Hughes.) i have her in the 1881 census and 1891 census in Llandudno.

i am finding some folks on ancestry that have this marriage, (with my hughes line attached to her, but i think its more guesswork on their part, as likely wrong as right... but no confirmation or marriage certs as yet to confirm her parentage).

so any help or suggestions  would be appreciated that can eliminate this marriage or ....

Hi, My name is Paula.  Iím researching my family tree and wonder if there is a link with yours.  My grandmother was Edith Hughes, born around 1909 on the Great Orme, Llandudno. Her parents were William Hughes & Sarah (nee Jones).  Her siblings were Betty, George, Sarah, Ellen, Gwen, Jack, William, Lily, Peggy and Dilys.  I have other information if youíre interested.  I live in Suffolk but sometimes visit Wales to continue my research. Thanks.

hello,
im not sure if there's a link,

my Mary Hughes was the aunt of  Margaret Ann Pearl Hughes,  my grandmother. (see this topic You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login).

Mary Ann did have a brother William Hughes. but i have hardly any info on him at all.

He was  b1887 Llandudno, died possibly 1935- uncorroborated,   and i do not know if he married at all or not.  he is mentioned on the memorial  named on the ww1 memorial - Glodaeth street - You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login   and was the brother of my great grandfather Ishmae Hughes,  but wether its the same william as you have,    i have no idea,  hopefully you will find some info on the forum.
regards Karen .

Paula, if you post the address where your Nain lived on the Great Orme it might ring a bell with someone on the forum.
My mother's maiden name was Hughes before she married my father who was also a Hughes but there is no connection with your family on either side of my family.
I did know of a George Hughes who lived in the West Shore area and a Jack Hughes  but the other names don't sound familiar to me.
Hope that you get some luck on here with your research

Karen, if I understand correctly you mention that William died circa 1935? If that is the case then he can't be one of the three William Hughes' listed on Llandudno war memorial as it only lists those that died on active service rather than those who served. Those who served, and survived the war, are listed on the town's Roll of Honour.

Hi Jack,
Thanks for that info,  sorry i see that link no longer works,
but it is my William Hughes, on the list, but as it as in welsh i was never able to translate it,  to see if it was survivors,  or those that died,  so i am still not sure now if its on the war memorial or a list of survivors,  any info would be useful re that.
thanks for clearing that up for me,
Karen.

ive copied and pasted the info i had without all the names,  just my William below

Hi Karen

My Welsh isn't the greatest either but the above link does not refer to the war memorial on Llandudno promenade but a plaque that is in Siloh Chapel on Gloddaeth Street and is a Roll of Honour of all the men from the congregation of that chapel and also Hyfrydle chapel (I believe to have been on the Great Orme but happy to be corrected) who served in WW1. There is a separate plaque listing the names of those who died.

Thus, your William Hughes survived the war. Attached a close up of William Hughes name on the Siloh memorial

Jack, yes you are right. Hyfrydle chapel was in St Beuno's Road on the Great Orme.  It was established in 1893 and had closed by the early 1980s and has now been converted into a dwelling.

I noticed recently that similar plaques from various closed Welsh Nonconformist chapels in the area have been placed in Seilo - this is to be welcomed as the fate of others has not been so fortunate.

Thanks to all for help & suggestions. Iím currently in Llandudno for a couple of days and have managed to get a copy of my Nanís birth certificate.  She was born on 01/06/1908 at 12 Prospect Terrace, Great Orme. Iíve also found the grave of her father William, mother Sarah and brother George, all buried together in the cemetery on the Great Orme. Iím hoping to go back a generation to trace Williamís parents but the Town Hall have no record of his birth so Iíve drawn a bit of a blank for now as I donít know his place of birth.  I may go to Conwy records office tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Good luck with your research Paula and I hope that you can find what you are looking for.    The Census records should show William's age and place of birth so perhaps you can work it back from there

Paula, did you have any luck in tracing William's parents?      I noticed from the 1911 Census that William and Sarah were both born in Llandudno so there should be some records at the Archives  as well as those online like the Census records
