How extra layer of Government could impact housing and travel in North Wales
The proposals to create four regional bodies is pressing ahead and could also have repercussions for Snowdonia National Park

Ministers have been described as “dictators” for pressing on with proposals for another regional layer of government, referred to by councillors on Anglesey as “back door reorganisation”.

The Welsh Government is pressing ahead with plans to create four regional bodies with powers to decide on where to build new housing developments and invest in transport across the respective areas.

The four corporate joint committees (CJCs) would be created in the south-east, south-west, north and mid Wales, while sitting on the committees would be the leaders of every contained council.

But the indirectly elected layer of government would sit above all six northern authorities as well as the Snowdonia National Park.

I had been blaming the EU red tape for our delayed import/export delays, this is a ridiculous situation.

Holyhead border post site confirmed by Welsh Government
Brexit and the deal struck by the UK Government means physical checks are required on certain goods entering the UK from the EU

Welsh Government has announced that Plot 9 at Parc Cybi has been selected as the site for the post.
A planning consultation under a Special Development Order will begin shortly.

The grim reality of Brexit has only just started to appear.  I susp[ct things will get far, far worse before any improvement.

This is looking like ..... too little too late

Welsh ports under threat from post-Brexit trade
The Welsh government has warned that post-Brexit trading patterns threaten the viability of the country's Irish Sea ports.

Trade flows from Ireland to Welsh ports have collapsed since January.

Irish hauliers are avoiding the ports due to complicated new administration.

The Welsh government has published a plan aimed at simplifying those processes and encouraging the return of Irish freight.
It says: "The urgency of this work has become self-evident.

"Data for Welsh ferry ports volumes in February shows a relative decline of in 'year-to-date volumes' of 50% in Holyhead, and 40% in the south West."

This is more encouraging news than the last few posts on the UK / Irish ferry story.

Freight traffic between Welsh and Irish ports rises after slump.

One of the largest Irish Sea ferry operators says freight traffic is on the up between its ports in Wales and Ireland, following a dip after Brexit.

It was down by half for much of the first three months of 2021 at Holyhead and Fishguard.

Ferry operators said this was partly because lorries from Ireland to other EU countries had started going on ferries direct to France.

But latest Stena Line figures show the reduction in lorry numbers is now 28%.

The figures are for the week ending on Easter Sunday, compared with the same week last year.

The company said at least one major exporter had now begun sending lorries through Holyhead again, and others were sending test loads as they look at returning to the route.

A depressing piece of news...........

IT AND digital jobs in North Wales are being filled by people from the rest of the UK and not local talent which is going elsewhere.

That is the belief of Colwyn Bay and Bangor-based S2 Recruitment who have witnessed this trend.

Sian Shepherd, business manager, said: "We have the skills right here in North Wales but for some reason a lot of people have travelled to England and further afield for work, rather than applying for digital roles right here on their doorstep.

“This has become a significant issue, especially due to the coronavirus pandemic and more people than ever moving online, with S2 Recruitment helping to appoint people from as far away as London, Kent, Norfolk and even Scotland to take up positions in Gwynedd and Anglesey.

“That said, we are also aware there are skilled and experienced people from North Wales working nationally and internationally for global companies, so there is a crossover.”

“Research has also revealed there is a massive need for more candidates with Artificial Intelligence, robotics and cloud computing experience, and there is a disparity in the number of young women applying for roles.

“More than 80 per cent of the positions we have appointed to in the last six months have been filled by male candidates, the number of female applicants in this sector is low,” added Sian.

“This is where education is going to be key, we really need to see academia and the private sector work together to attract more youngsters into industries where there will be a better chance of a career for them, and to address the demographic challenges.

“It is a candidate-driven market right now, especially for those who are highly skilled, so it’s imperative this is capitalised on.”

A study by the Learning and Work Institute found that across the UK, one in four companies have a significant gap when it comes to basic computer skills. There has been a 40 per cent fall in school pupils taking ICT at GCSE level since 2015.   ref Pioneer

UK Government still 'identifying' customs site at Holyhead for already delayed post-Brexit checks
HMRC wants a suitable location close to where Welsh Government will carry out checks on animals, plants and products of animal origin

UK Government says it is “currently identifying” a suitable location for a customs facility near Holyhead port in preparation for already delayed checks on EU traffic.

Exports to the EU from Britain have been subject to controls since January 1, but the UK Government decided to opt for a phased approach on EU imports to give hauliers and businesses more time to adapt.

Checks were due to be introduced in stages from April 1 and from July 1 but UK Government has been told the network of border posts will not be built on time - and in Holyhead they are still finalising where the site will be.

NORTH Wales could become one of the most prosperous areas in Europe within ten years, a business leader has said.

Askar Sheibani, managing director and CEO of Comtek Network Systems and chairman of Deeside Business Forum (DBF), said the transformative possibilities of large scale projects in the region's future could "completely change North Wales' economy.

A good sign..............

Stena Line is bringing its new vessel Stena Estrid back to its key Holyhead – Dublin route in the expectation that restrictions on travel between Wales and Ireland will be removed soon.

In recent months the ship moved to direct Ireland - France routes due to the dip in passenger numbers, and the Brexit and lockdown hit on Wales to Ireland freight trade.

No plans to move flying operations from RAF Valley to RAF Leeming confirms Ministry of Defence
Reply from junior defence minister James Heappey said: “There are no plans to move any flying operations from RAF Valley to RAF Leeming.

“RAF Valley will remain the home of UK Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS) Hawk T2, Texan T1 and Jupiter fleets.

“There's been quite a few politically inspired social media rumours flying around faster than a Hawk itself suggesting the jets were leaving for Leeming because that’s in the Chancellor’s constituency.

Economy minister Vaughan Gething on North Wales, Wylfa and not having dedicated tourism minister

The Welsh Government’s new Economy Minister Vaughan Gething says North Wales will not be “de-prioritised” in his department and responded to criticism that the deputy minister position for tourism had been dropped.

Mr Gething has replaced North Wales MS Ken Skates in the role but he says there is “no way” he will ignore the region and says he sees tourism, marine energy, aerospace and the post-Covid relocation of skilled people as potential key drivers of economic growth.
He also said he had not given up on nuclear investment at Wylfa.

Welsh Government has come under criticism for dropping the dedicated deputy tourism role.
But Mr Gething said it was wrong to say that tourism isn’t a priority sector when “actually it’s now within my direct brief as a cabinet minister”.

He added: “It’s an area where I think we can look for growth and support and I’m really excited about having it as part of the portfolio,
“I think it makes a lot more sense for it to be in the economy brief because it’s a key economic sector. The numbers of people employed in the sector are significant and there are opportunities to look at what we can do more of in the future.”
