10th South Wales Borderers
« on: January 27, 2015, 05:26:50 pm »
Hi to all at Three Towns,

My name is Gavin Rees, i'm from Pontypool in South Wales and am researching a book covering the World War One service history of the 10th Battalion South Wales Borderers 1st Gwents.

The Battalion formed in the Autumn and Winter 1914 from miners and ironworkers of the Western Valley of Monmouthshire. The majority of the men were employed by the Ebbw Vale Iron Coal and Steel Coy making it a really close knit battalion.

In January 1915 the men arrived in Colwyn Bay to start basic training, at first the men were billeted with the civilian population until a camp was built for them on the Coed Coch Estate in Colwyn.

I have been in touch with Colwyn Bay library, who have been a great help and supplied some really good articles but am always on the look out for anything extra that could be included in the book.

From a personal point of view my grandfathers uncle served with the Btn and lodged with the Jones family of Fern Royd, Greenfield Rd, Colwyn. He kept up correspondance with the daughter and eventually returned in April 1918 to marry her.

If anyone thinks they have any letters, pictures, postcards or general information which could be of help please feel free to mail me at  gwentpal@hotmail.com

Many thanks Gavin
