A chance I took when posting the quiz!  This large stuffed Tiger, about five feet long is to be a Prize in one of the St David Hospice Raffles later in the year.  If you would like to own it, make sure you buy a few tickets to support the Hospice.   Remember you got to be in it to win it!

If we had known you were there Nem, and it was your dog doing the sniffing, I would have introduced myself.   Another day maybe?    ZXZ

'Twasn't me Yorkie, but my OH. I was serving down in the Ty Gobaith shop. My OH who works for St David's was delivering a card which had been wrongly delivered to us. It just happened that he told me about the interest our dog had taken in the tiger whilst he was talking to someone.! You and I seem destined to miss each other every time ! ???

Quiz Time - Where is North?
« Reply #2644 on: March 21, 2014, 02:02:50 pm »
The second stage of consultation is now open for the proposed construction of the Rhiannon Offshore Wind Farm.

Below is a plan provided by Celtic Array.

Can someone please confirm that the direction of NORTH is correct in the top right hand corner?

Is NORTH definitely straight out from the North Shore as per the diagram?

Bri, next time you are walking along the prom I am pretty certain that there is a white plaque set in the prom right in front of the bandstand containing a compass which will answer your question about the direction of due North.

You are correct, Gwynant, and I think it points in a north westerly direction towards the tip of the Great Orme or maybe I am mistaken.

BTW, how are you keeping?  :cyclist40:

We don't hear much from you on here these days.

I'm fine Bri, thanks for asking, been a bit busy during the last few weeks, and only had time to check the Forum now and again. Also some of the the Quiz questions have been quite hard recently, for me anyway!

The diagram is correct Bri. It does show the correct direction of North. You can check it out for yourself on Google Earth.

Well something is not quite right, Blongb.

I have just got back from the bandstand, after accepting the suggestion from Gwynant yesterday, and according to the compass in front of the bandstand NORTH from there is over towards the far end of the pier.

It is certainly not straight out to sea as suggested by this diagram.

In other words the NORTH on the diagram is not the same NORTH on the promenade.

The diagram indicates Grid North, I wonder what the Promenade markers indicate? All I remember is variation West magnetic best. The following Hyper links help to explain what I'm talking about Bri. Also they have gone to the trouble to put on their diagram Latitude and Longitude markers so I still think their direction of Grid North is correct

Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_north

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_north_pole

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grid_north

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_declination

I am not disputing what you say but please take a wander down the promenade and have a close look at the compass immediately in front of the bandstand and you will soon see what I mean.

In other words the NORTH on the diagram is not the same NORTH on the promenade.

North on the diagram is GRID North and it does point in the right direction. Believe the Grid not some arbitrary marker put on the Promenade for the benefit of the Tourists.
If you look straight out to sea from the putting green by the Happy Valley you are looking at the hills of Dumfries and Galloway.  $good$

NORTH on the prom compass points towards Belfast.  :o

Which is probably correct as the normal view of the UK is not North and South!  It should be tilted to the right with Glasgow almost above London!   ZXZ
