DaveR:
Today's focus is on the Black Lion in Castle Street, Conwy, an eyesore that is all the worse for the fact it is one of the oldest buildings in the town, dating back to 1589! It's been a mess for about 10 years or more now, although plans are being prepared by the Anglesey based owner to actually do something with it. Until work starts though, it's staying on the list! My mind boggles that such a fantastic building in a great location can have been left empty and uncared for, for so long.

The Black Lion by SnakeCorp, on Flickr

History of the Black Lion (taken from my blog) follows:

Black Lion (Y Llew Du), built in 1589 by John Brickdall, Vicar of Conwy (1569-1607); his initials and those of his wife appear over the door together with the date 1589 (they were married on the 10th May 1589).  Brickdall's father was the Constable of Conwy Castle at the time of construction and later died of the plague.

We are looking for the name of his wife and that's the tricky bit

The inscription 1589 I B E  refers to the date of the erection of the building by John Brickdall and his wife Em

I couldn't find anything for her on Google    >?>??   but the information comes from Chris Draper's book " Walks from Conwy"   and well worth a read for anyone interested in walks with history.

Dave has got most of the question correct so well done.   &well&

Has he really?

For a long time, this building was presumed to date from 1589, the year displayed above the front door. But c.2010 a sample taken from one of the roof timbers, on behalf of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, was tested and established that the timber was felled in 1441-42.

The oldest parts of the building date from the period when Conwy was rebuilt following destruction of the walled town in 1401 by the forces of Welsh rebel leader Owain Glyndwr. Archaeology has indicated the house was originally an urban two-bay hall house with jointed crucks. The hall house was converted in 1589, when it became a stone-walled storeyed house with hearth passage.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it DaveR, Hugo, SnakeCorp and Christopher Draper.  $hands$

Trojan,  you're not telling us something we didn't know already,  that info is readily available on Google or the Archives.    In all probability there was a house on that site from at least the 1300's but John Brickdall built it or "converted it" into his matrimonial home in 1589 and that is what the inscription is for.

It's another thing you can find on Google, if you know where to see it.

I was going by this:

In all probability? We need hard facts here Hugo.

I expect the builder of the house knew what year it was when he put the inscription up.  Z**

Yea, he probably propped his ladder against the 1441-2 roof timbers.
