Thank you. It looks quite Venetian and completely different from the other buildings in the street.
I wonder if he had trouble getting permission for it?

I may be wrong, (and more often than not I am), but I think that planning permission was introduced shortly after the end of the second world war.  Now I will await a sharp repremand from those in the know for peddling untruths, see if I care, I will take it like a man

You're absolutely......correct. The Town & Country Planning Act was introduced in 1947.
