The plaques were erected by William Rowlands in 1937 & were last restored by Conwy Council in 1996, so are looking pretty good considering. As for Welsh mutations I lost the plot while trying to learn Welsh when I saw the mutation Nghonwy for Conwy

Thanks very much for posting that information about those plaques Meleri,  it was lovely coming across them.

I'm with you on those nasal mutations and when I used to have to visit people in Anglesey with my job I used to go to this place Llanfairynghornwy  try pronouncing that one, it's not the easiest

That's the reason no English speakers have ever visited "Dwygyfylchi" it's always referred to as that place just past Conway and like you mutations finish me too.

Many struggle with even the simple place names ... Rowen becomes Rowan (as in the tree), Llandudno is usually clan-dud-know and Betws-y-Coed bcomes Betsy-code.  I was once asked how to get to Routine - turned out they meant Ruthin.  I'm sure you can come up with many more.

It does puzzle me how TV and radio presenters have no problem with the likes of Leicester, Gloucester, Carlisle and High Wycombe but totally fail when it's a place in Wales.

I remember as a teenager walking up Esgyryn at the back of Llandudno Junction and being asked by a visitor if I knew the way to Brian Puddew and I had no idea.

Later I realised he was looking for directions to Bryn Pydew.

Don't you remember the Puddew family who lived on Esgyryn, they had a son called Brian ?

At first glance it looked like a Toblerone with a nail through it, but I'm stuck on it too
