The result of your calculation has been noted.  A reasonable first attempt may I say!    L0L

Another Riddle?

Just a reminder, , , , ,
For this one has to assume that the World is a perfect sphere of 24,000 miles circumference.

A man (or it could be a woman) lays a piece of string measuring 24,000 miles all the way round the equator.
He then decides that he would like the string to be half an inch above ground level for all of the 24,000 miles.
How much extra string would he need?

An estimate will be sufficient - the nearest to within a limit set by me will get 5 Brownie Points.

Yes it was wrong.  I moved post forward as it had got back to previous page.  All guesses so far are wrong but I doubt anyone will get exact answer, so nearest will be aclaimed the winner!

I have pondered on this, and I wish to throw an answer of an additional 4278 miles required.

The circumferance of a circle is pi x radius.

To increase the radius by 1/2 inch, the circumferance would need to be increased by 1/2 inch x pi.

So I'm going to say the string needs to be lengthened by a little less than 2 inches.

Paddy, I think that would only be true if you extended the circumference by 1/2 inch at two points only (i.e directly opposite poles)

its a big number...
