Stars take to the road ahead of Wales Rally GB's arrival in North Wales

Rugby stars, council leaders and mountain bike champions were among the VIP guests to take to the tracks yesterday at the Wales Rally GB media day.

The event saw some of the world’s best rally drivers including Wales’ Elfyn Evans, son of former British Rally Champion Gwyndaf Evans, Kris Meeke and Hayden Paddon, showcase their talents as they flew, glided and skidded around the lake at Llyn Brenig following a presentation by rally organisers.

Starting on Friday, November 14, in Colwyn Bay, the three-day event will see the drivers take on a series of tracks and challenges across North Wales including Chirk Castle, Llyn Brenig, Kinmel Bay and Dyfi before ending the race in Llandudno on the Sunday.

Conwy council leader Cllr Dilwyn Roberts gave a speech to guests on how proud the county is to be able to host not only part of the Wales Rally GB, but also the Cambrian Rally, due to take place next weekend.

Wales Rally GB: McRae name to feature at this year's event

Britain’s most famous rallying family will be appearing at this year’s Wales Rally GB with Jimmy McRae set to compete in the popular Wales Rally GB National.

After a ten-year absence, McRae is returning to the fearsome Welsh forests, racing in a classic Vauxhall Firenza from the Seventies.
Perhaps best known as the father of global rally legend Colin McRae, the first British driver to win the FIA World Rally Championship and a three-time Rally GB winner, Jimmy’s competitive record is pretty impressive in his own merit.
The Scotsman, who turns 71 later this month, won the British Rally Championship title on no fewer than five occasions and twice finished third on the Rally GB.

The Wales Rally GB National, which shadows the international event, has several oversubscribed classes for historic rally cars and this year’s entry features numerous iconic crowd-pleasers from yesteryear including a Porsche 911, Lancia Stratos and MG Metro 6R4 as well as numerous tail-wagging Ford Escort MkIIs.

Organisers of next month’s Wales Rally GB, to be held between November 13-16, have confirmed the stage has been over-subscribed for the first time in years.
The final round of this year's World Rally Championship will see a maximum 160-car field, with no fewer than 72 teams representing 26 nations lining up to face 23 challenging stages run against the clock.
