Anglesey 'energy island' jobs
A north Wales college is set to get a £20m investment to make sure the area is ready to meet the demands of a new nuclear power station on Anglesey.
The new Wylfa Newydd nuclear plant will need 8,500 construction workers and a 1,000 station staff when built.
The Anglesey Energy Island strategy aims to bring in 2,500 new jobs and £2.3bn of investment over 15 years.
It is hoped local people will make up at least 20% of the construction workforce.
"This is going to be a massive project - the equivalent of the London 2012 Olympic village - and this could cause a big displacement from across local employers."

Wylfa will keep generating power on Anglesey until December 2015

The nuclear plant on Anglesey will continue generating power for more than a year, it has been revealed.
Operators Magnox had been waiting to learn whether an extension to the life of Wylfa’s Reactor 1 would be granted.
The reactor could have closed at the end of September, but the Office for Nuclear Regulation confirmed on Tuesday that generation will continue until December 2015.
A consultation for the development of Horizon Nuclear Power’s proposed new plant at Wylfa has also been launched this week.

Have Your Say....

As part of the planning process for the project, we are seeking the views of the local community, the general public, local authorities and a range of statutory and other non-statutory bodies.

I attended one at the Town Hall in Llandudno on Thursday, 30 October.

It was on from 2pm - 8pm.

Apart from another gentleman, I was the only one there during the time I went along.

I think people see it more to do with Anglesey, but if it goes ahead I think it will have a big impact on the area as a whole.

Why Greenpeace think Anglesey's Wylfa Newydd power plant may never be built

Greenpeace has challenged the case for a new nuclear power station in Wales and cast doubt on whether the plans for Wylfa Newydd will ever become reality.

The campaigning charity has submitted evidence to Westminster’s Welsh Affairs committee warning the project is based on an “outdated” concept.

Greenpeace is opposed to new nuclear power because of concerns including what to do with the waste, the danger of accidents and the risk of terrorist attack.
It insists it is also “questionable, at the very least” that nuclear is the most effective way to deliver low carbon power.

It also questions whether the necessary investment will be secured to build the planned UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWRs) at the Anglesey site and challenges the argument that the generation needs a new era of nuclear generation.
Greenpeace argues that a “predominantly renewable system” could “provide full system security by 2030, with substantial electrification of heat and transport”.

The submission by Greenpeace Chief Scientist Doug Parr, who will appear before the Welsh Affairs committee today, states: “Wylfa Newydd is a project based on a concept of nuclear power being essential for UK’s energy future. This is outdated, and many organisations (not Government) see that.

'Slim chance' Wylfa Newydd nuclear plant will go ahead

Independent consultant Mycle Schneider is a lead author of the annual World Nuclear Status report.
He said the Hinkley Point C project's difficulties would affect Wylfa Newydd's ability to attract investors.
But Horizon Nuclear Power said it was very confident the new power station would be delivered successfully.
Speaking to BBC Radio Cymru's Post Cyntaf programme, Mr Schneider, who has advised both the French and German governments on nuclear policy, said: "The Hinkley Point project is in great difficulties and you could argue that the uncertainties are even larger in the case of Wylfa Newydd."
The Anglesey plant, he said, would need "very clear and very large subsidies to get off the ground".
Horizon is in talks with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on issues such as the strike price, which will be key to attracting additional finance.
Richard Foxhall of Horizon Nuclear Power told BBC Wales other investors would need to be brought on board to deliver Wylfa Newydd and that talks were ongoing
