It's sad that such fine architecture gets abandoned and left in a state of disrepair like that.  :(

Some photos from my recent visit to Manchester are here. I only had my small Nikon compact camera with me:

Just goes to show that size doesn't matter!   :D

Really enjoyed looking at your Manchester photos DaveR. I've been having my own little quiz trying to identify where they were all taken. I'm intrigued how you took the one of the Britannia hotel. Was it taken from the car?

Thank you.  :) Yes, the Britannia pic was taken from the car!  ;D I really enjoyed my visit and will be returning soon.

The cloudy sky gives a stereotypical portrait of Manchester.

I like the shot of the 19th century warehouse with the modern hotel behind.

The Manchester and Salford Junction canal ran under that warehouse at one time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_and_Salford_Junction_Canal

In 1885 the Great Northern Warehouse was built on top of the line of the canal and a dock was constructed to allow the interchange of goods. There were four large bays below the warehouse with two lift shafts to allow goods to be unloaded from the boats using the canal, and raised up to the warehouse for storage.

I did like the contrast between the old & new visible everywhere in Manchester.

I also found it amazing that there was the odd derelict building even in the city centre where property values are sky high. The Withy Grove Stores (at side of Printworks) are a great example:

I bet you were itching to explore inside some of those derelict buildings DaveR. The car parks in the old warehouses are enough for me. There is no way I will go in the one in the Great Northern in your photo. Too creepy by half!
The contrast of the new and the old is one of the things I like most about the "new" Manchester.
Is Melanie a photographer as well or does she take to the shops when you are clicking away?
I hope you do go again. It's really interesting to see it from the eyes of a photographer.

Yes, I would have loved to take a look inside some of the derelict buildings, but you have to be very careful in cities as its far more likely there will be squatters or drug addicts perhaps living inside etc. Melanie doesn't do any photography but enjoys the walk.  :) I'm sure we will be back very soon.
