It wouldn't save a business man I know anything!     Well his road tax expired on 1st Dec 2019 and the MOT expired 3 months prior to that

Morrisons has reduced its petrol prices to a maximum of 99.7p per litre at its UK forecourts.

The supermarket said this is the first time the fuel has been “sold nationally” for less than £1 per litre since February 2016.

It has also cut its diesel price to no more than 104.7p per litre.

Morrisons’ head of fuel Ashley Myers said: “This cut will help people who are travelling to work, those shopping for essentials, and those assisting the elderly and vulnerable.

“We want to play our full part in reducing the cost of living and feeding the nation at this difficult time.”   ref  Pioneer

Oh;  so they forgot to mention that currently, oil producers are actually paying people to take the petrol away? Because the international oil price has crashed, it's now in negative equity, and the oil companies have run out of storage space and so are paying companies to take it off their hands.

Over a million unroadworthy cars could return to the roads in coming weeks due to the Government’s decision to offer an MOT exemption to drivers.

As lockdown eases and people begin to use their cars more to get to work or for leisure, maintenance specialist Kwik Fit has warned that many cars could be unsafe, having skipped their MOT.

In March, the Department for Transport said that all cars with an MOT after March 30 would be granted an automatic six-month extension to their test. The policy is due to remain in place until March 2021.

However, Kwik Fit says that analysis of fail rates in its own records and DVLA data indicates an estimated 1.096m of the cars granted an extension would have failed the MOT with dangerous or major faults had they undergone an MOT.

Does anyone know if the extended date is retained when you eventually have a test, or does the date move on just 6 months ?

I can see a glut of tests to be carried out later in the year.

Not sure, but the use of the word extended, makes me think it will be 12 months cover ?

"Due to the unfolding COVID-19 situation, cars and vans and motorcycles due their MOT from 30 March 2020 will have their MOT extended by 6 months."

Mull, the MOT's on  both my cars expired after March so I have just put my car details in to " car tax checker "  and the MOT expiry date has automatically been updated to 6  months ahead on both cars.
Ironically I had been thinking of having a MOT done soon but there is no need now, the cars are both ok and I'm not going more than 5 miles away for the foreseeable future anyway

Hi Hugo
My MOT was due on 08 June and has been put back to 08 December.  My son who is in the trade recommends not leaving it to the last minute going for the test as he thinks the some test centres will struggle to keep up with the backlog of tests and outstanding repairs following the lockdown.
My earlier question was will my test date next year revert to 08 June ?

Boris Johnson is considering proposals to give drivers up to £6,000 to exchange their petrol or diesel car for an electric model - according to reports.

The Telegraph newspaper reported that the Prime Minister may use a speech on the economy on July 6 to set out his plans for a scrappage scheme.

The move is believed to be designed to help manufacturers hit hard by the coronavirus crisis, with sales of new cars down nearly 90 per cent in May compared with the same month in 2019.

A 'revolutionary' new service has been launched by the DVLA to dramatically speed up the process of updating details on a vehicle log book.

The DVLA have announced today (June 18) that motorists who need to update the address details on their vehicle log book (V5C) can now do this online in a matter of minutes.

The service says the changes mean it will slash the amount of time it takes for motorists to receive a new log book from up to six weeks to just five working days.

Last year, the DVLA received about 1.4 million paper applications for change of address on a vehicle record.

Highway Code to make 'significant' changes for cyclists and pedestrians.

A new “hierarchy of road users” which puts the greatest responsibility for reducing danger onto drivers is among proposals announced as part of a Department for Transport consultation on updating the road users’ hand book.

New rules on when different road users should give priority to others
Setting out clear rules on passing distances and speeds for drivers overtaking cyclists and horse riders
Advice on blanket 20mph zones in urban areas
Announcing the consultation, the DfT explained: "[The hierarchy of road users] ensures that those road users who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they may pose to other road users.

"The objective of the hierarchy is not to give priority to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders in every situation, but rather to ensure a more mutually respectful and considerate culture of safe and effective road use that benefits all users”.

This principle, it added: “applies most strongly to drivers of large goods and passenger vehicles, followed by vans/minibuses, cars/taxis and motorcycles”.

The other major changes include rules to create clearer and stronger priorities for pedestrians, particularly at junctions, and clarify where pedestrians have right of way.

This will include recommending cars and bikes turning into or out of side roads give way to pedestrians waiting to cross.

The third major point of the updates will place a requirement on drivers to give priority to cyclists when they are turning into or out of a junction, or changing direction or lane, just as they would to other motor vehicles.

Specific guidance for drivers sets out the speeds and distances drivers should observe when passing cyclists and horse riders.

The new text says drivers passing cyclists should leave a gap of at least 1.5 metres at speeds under 30mph and at least two metres at more than 30mph.

It also says they should not pass horses at more than 15mph and with a gap of at least two metres.

The updated Code will also recommend drivers adopt the “Dutch reach” method of getting out of a car.
This means using the hand furthest from the door to pull the handle, which forces you to twist your body, making it more likely you’ll see a cyclist approaching from behind.

EV drivers will also be warned to ensure charging cables do not present a trip hazard for pedestrians and new guidance will highlight the growing use of blanket 20mph zones in place of the standard 30mph limit in urban areas.         ref Pioneer

The DVLA has warned motorists to expect 'long delays' to some of its services as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Since the start of lockdown, drivers have seen major delays in services such as obtaining new logbooks and licences, with many taking to social media to air their frustrations.

What have the DVLA said?
The agency says such hold-ups are due to reduced staff numbers caused by the coronavirus outbreak and are likely to continue while social distancing measures remain in place at its offices.

In a statement, the DVLA advised drivers: “Paper applications sent to our office in Swansea will take longer to process as they must be dealt with in person on site, where we are working with reduced numbers to meet social distancing requirements.

“If you’ve already made an application we will process this and return any documentation as quickly as possible.”

I'm not a fan of motor bikes but I must admit to being impressed by this Harley Davidson.     It looked immaculate as if it had just come out of the showroom           $good$
