I see that Suepp has been busily posting some old photos in the Gallery:

Just like to inform that the Donkey Lady, Olwen (Hughes) Burroughs is now in a nursing home. It seems unlikely that she will be able to continue with the the donkeys on the shore next year. With the costs of the Licence, Public Liability Insurance, Stabling, Fodder, Winter Quartering, Wages for assistants, Vets Fees, etc. it could be the end of an era. The family have provided Donkey Rides for the best part of a century, or longer. It would be appropriate if a Plaque would be placed on their residence in Jubilee St, similar to the one for the Codman Family, of the Punch and Judy fame. Any idea how one would go about requesting/arranging one?   *&(

That's sad news. A plaque would be a good idea.

What a shame.  :(  I hope someone else can take it on, still a very popular attraction and a goldmine, I'm sure.

Is this Olwen?

Llandudno Town Council would be the people to approach, regarding a plaque:

Perhaps this is a business opportunity for someone in the forum?

Sorry to disappoint you Dave, but from conversations with one of the family, it is far from being a lucrative business. On the contrary, in today's societies  expectations, it would be regarded as below poverty level. Due to the costs I mentioned previously. I think that the family are considering how they can continue.  :(

As regards the Photo with the donkeys, I think that the lady with them is from the family on the Orme that has/had, donkeys

I have sent an e-mail to the Clerk of the Council requesting information on the procedure for obtaining a Plaque to be placed on the 'Donkey Lady's' home. I''l keep you informed of the progress. And request support if and when required.    Y^^Y

Hi Quiggs,  it was nice to meet you yesterday!

Am I confused?  because I thought the Donkeys on the bech were housed in those fields near Black Gate on The Orme?
They are usually led around by a man,  so I thought all was well?

There are more than one family with Donkeys in Llandudno, but I believe that the family of Olwen Hughes Burroughs were the first. I'll try and gain confirmation of all the details, ASAP.

I believe the Jones family own the ones on the Orme.

One trader Billy Pip sold his business to the Jones family in the early 1940's. Les Jones came out of the Army in 1945 and used his gratuity to buy into his Father's business.
