CONDITIONAL planning permission has been granted for the demolition of a 1930s art deco house in Rhos-on-Sea.

Developers Commercial Development Management announced proposals in October for the property, at 57 Marine Drive, to be knocked down and replaced with five apartments and a car parking space.

At a planning meeting on January 12, members of Conwy County Borough Council voted 9-3 in favour of the demolition, despite widespread objections to the plans from elsewhere.

The discussion regarding the building at the planning meeting is available at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6rGipH3-44 (starts at 57:30).

An attempt to have the property become a listed building previously failed after Cadw, a Welsh Government service protecting historic buildings and structures, found it did not meet the full listing criteria.

RHOS-ON-SEA’S Tree of Lights appeal has raised more than £27,500 for St David’s Hospice, a charity that provides care to adult patients across Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey.

Held in November, it is a tradition that dates back more than 20 years and has raised more than £361,000 since its inception.

Organised by the Rhos-on-Sea Rotary Club, the event invites members of the community to donate and in turn dedicate a light to the Hospice’s Rotary Tree of Lights in memory of a loved one.

RHOS-ON-SEA residents are hoping to see changes made to a road plan that aims to reinvigorate the Colwyn Bay area.

Currently, Conwy County Borough Council are planning the Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project Phase 2b, which aims to improve coastal defences by importing one million tonnes of sand to place in front of the existing sea wall, protecting said wall and the properties and infrastructure behind it.

Furthermore, the project aims to revitalise the promenade, including the renewal of surfaces, improving street lighting and improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.

Traffic flow and parking arrangements are also important factors in the project, with improved safety for pedestrians a key agenda of the renovation.

However, some residents believe this will disrupt life and cause a drastic increase in traffic.

Peter Sutton, whose home is adjacent to Cayley Promenade, said: “This will devastate the neighbourhood and life will never be the same.

People living in a North Wales seaside street face a 778 per cent increase in traffic if plans for a waterfront renovation project get the go-ahead, according to one campaigner.

Conwy Council wants to bring in a one-way system for traffic going from Rhos-on-Sea towards Colwyn Bay along West Promenade, and replace well-established kiosks as part of a scheme in Rhos-on-Sea and Colwyn Bay.

An MP has criticised Conwy County Council officers, claiming their reluctance to attend a public meeting to discuss a one-way system on Rhos-on-Sea’s West Promenade is unacceptable.

David Jones MP organised a public meeting so residents could question council officers about plans to bring in the one-way system for traffic travelling from Rhos to Colwyn Bay.

A public meeting at the Methodist Church Hall. But the MP says the proposed meeting was cancelled as council officers refused to attend to discuss the matter in case they were met by angry residents.

It is, but sadly predictable. The officer may not be elected, but they still work for the Conwy residents, and they should have the courage to face them.

Disappointing to hear this.  I can remember in the 1970s when the on-street parking restrictions were proposed by the then Gwynedd County Council.  Hugh Davies the County Surveyor attended a packed, hostile public meeting in Llandudno Town Hall to/explain justify the proposal.  The local County Councillors were on the stage with him.  They did impose the restrictions which are still with us. At least local government people then would face the public even if the message was unpalatable.  The Cabinet Member should insist that the current crop attend.

DARREN Millar, MS for Clwyd West, has launched a petition urging Conwy County Borough Council to scrap plans for changes to the Rhos-on-Sea promenade.

The Council is seeking to introduce a one-way system along the bottom of the Cayley Embankment on Rhos on Sea promenade as part of its proposals to improve the sea front with the Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project Phase 2b.

If implemented, the one-way proposals will result in thousands of vehicles travelling up the embankment and more traffic driving through residential parts of Rhos-on-Sea, potentially causing chaos and disruption for residents.

Still not resolved.....a definite case of " if its not broken, don't try and fix it"

New promenade one-way system 'will kill' seaside town, say protesters
Residents and business owners will take to the streets of Rhos on Sea this weekend

Residents and business owners in Rhos on Sea will take to the streets on Saturday to protest against plans to introduce a one-way system on West Promenade.

The council’s £14m coastal defence scheme will include a new one-way system along Rhos on Sea promenade, which will also see seafront kiosks demolished and replaced.

Residents fear increased traffic on the Cayley Promenade - the road that runs above the embankment and parallel to the lower West Promenade - as west-bound traffic into Rhos on Sea is rerouted through residential areas.
