ASSETS to tourism in Llandudno
« on: October 17, 2010, 05:56:31 pm »
We often complain about Llandudno's eyesores, so let's re-dress the balance by highlighting Llandudno's Treasures. What are the places (big or small) that make Llandudno so special? Please add your own nominations....

I'll kick things off with...

The Pier! One of the best preserved in the UK and the envy of many seaside towns:

My second nomination is the Rest & Be Thankful Cafe, halfway around the Marine Drive on the Great Orme. Anyone who's ever walked around the Orme will appreciate how well named this Cafe is! As well as refreshments, it also houses an interesting collection of old photos of Llandudno and exploration photos from the Great Orme Exploration Society.

Llandudno's other Orme, the Little one. A couple of cheese burgers, a spectacular view, what more could anyone want?

The kiosk seen in Trojan's photo is still there today and forms the right-hand side of the present Rest & Be Thankful cafe:

My next nomination is Happy Valley, the park on the side of the Great Orme, a great place to wander around regardless of the time of year. It may not be quite as popular as in its heyday and is suffering from uninspired CCBC management but still undoubtedly one of Llandudno's Treasures:

It's at an area called Pen-y-Dinas, above Happy Valley Merddin.  At Pen y Dinas, hidden in the dense undergrowth are an indeterminate number of stone circles, and the defensive slopes of an ancient British hill fort.

From Eve Parry's Mysterious Mountain book:

On the Southern slopes of the Orme, overlooking the town of Llandudno, there is an area known as Pen Dinas, where are the remains of a prehistoric settlement. Close by, on the edge of a precipice, lies a large rectangular stone. It is known as the Rocking Stone and a metal plaque may be seen attached to the stone, to this effect. Legend tells us that the Druids used the Rocking Stone as a means of proving the guilt or innocence of criminals. The poor, trembling creature was made to stand on the stone. If the accused was able to make it rock, they were deemed to be innocent, but if the stone  stood firm, the guilty wretch was thrown over the cliff to be broken on the rocks below. There are many sources for this story, some saying that the stone still rocks and others insisting that it will not move. Could it be that the stone still possesses the power to judge guilt or innocence?
