HMS Illustrious the carrier is cruising north in the Irish Sea.
She is off Pwllheli at the moment.
Keep your eyes peeled, it is a pity it is going dark.

The Airbus ship, Ciuodo de Cadiz is in Holyhead harbour for inspection after her mishap last week.

The Barent Zanen is currently busily engaged on delivering sand to the new beach at Colwyn Bay.

Which will probably be all washed back from whence it came in the first spell of rough weather we have.  Unless, they are building some form of retaining structure.   ££$

Re: Shipping news - Balmoral sailing in 2017
« Reply #8 on: March 10, 2017, 02:52:08 pm »
A provisional timetable for sailings of the MV Balmoral has been posted on the White Funnel website.
Very good news as sailings from Llandudno as proposed show a significant increase over previous years - 7 days in June, 8 days in July and 14 days in September.  Of particular note are two sailings to Port St Mary in the Isle of Man- thought to be the first time the Balmoral has carried passengers to the Island from Llandudno.

See whitefunnel.co.uk for more details.

From what I understand all sailings in 2017 will be dependant on new generators being fitted in the near future.

Re Ormemacs link today.......

White Funnel Limited regrets to announce that MV Balmoral will not be sailing next season.2018  The
Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has recently made clear that the type of hull re-plating work
undertaken and approved over many years is no longer acceptable and needs to be changed before
she operates again. This work is expensive and exceeds the resources currently available to the
owning charity, MV Balmoral Fund Limited.
The charity has recently submitted a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for £3.72m for major capital
work that will also improve educational facilities aboard the ship, restore heritage features which need
refurbishment and make crew accommodation better suited to current requirements. The work will
also ensure that Balmoral complies with changes to regulations affecting heritage ships which the
Maritime & Coastguard Agency is currently developing. The temporary suspension of operation will
enable the owning charity to concentrate on fund-raising and the Heritage Lottery Fund bid.
During this interim period the White Funnel offices will be closed until further notice. Holders of
concessionary or complimentary tickets and vouchers should retain these for use when Balmoral
returns to service. Suppliers should address any correspondence to balmoral@whitefunnel.co.uk
We regret that with the closure of the Bristol office no other correspondence can be entered into. For
details of the charity’s appeal and news, please refer to its website, www.mvbalmoral.org.uk . To
receive news of progress and future plans please register to receive the charity’s newsletter at
www.heritagesteamers.co.uk/balmoral/news.htm
We thank all our passengers, suppliers and a wide range of others for their unwavering support for
the ship over the past three seasons since we returned Balmoral to service in 2015. We very much
hope we can continue to rely on your support in the future.

I recall it was the MCA which blocked the sailings from Llandudno to Port St Mary (IoM) and similar ones from Whitehaven last summer.  You could be excused for thinking they are less than encouraging to MV Balmoral.

at http://www.heritagesteamers.co.uk/balmoral/news.htm it says
"We have more recently been advised that the long accepted practice of using doubled plates to repair the hull was no longer acceptable for anything other than emergency repairs. This would not only apply to future repairs but also means that previous repairs need to be removed and re-done."

Using doublers (an external patch which isn't connected to the ships internal structure and leaves the damage or corrosion present underneath) is only generally considered a temporary repair until a permanent repair of cutting out the damaged area and replacing the affected structure, so I am surprised they say it was 'long accepted' as a repair.

It also says
"We had expected to be required to deal with the “Doubled Plates” issue immediately before the 2019 season but in the last few weeks the MCA have advised that they will not issue a passenger certificate until the work has been done. The problem is that such repairs can fail without warning and many potential failures might not be detected, even by ultrasound surveys."
and
" she is also reliant upon numerous exemptions granted over the years by the MCA and its predecessors for her to be able to operate in the manner we are used to"
I wonder what all these exemptions are.

I'm sure everyone including the MCA would like to see her continue sailing, but knowing that she does so in a safe seaworthy condition. Maybe the withdrawl of the exemption to sail to the IOM was a way of restrincting her operation to port hopping along the coast for everyone's safety.
