A programme from 1901.  The opening of the rifle range on Morfa (I think)

Looks like it was printed by R. E. Jones & Bros, printers in Conwy.

They're the same company who printed the North Wales Weekly News.

Funny this should crop up. I was loaned a book this weekend and the Countess of Dundonald is mentioned in it. Her address was Gwyrch Castle, (same one?, )she must have made the journey-- a long way in those days.

Dave--I am treading on dangerous ground here so I'll pass it on to you. Your wikipedia link states these notes were issued in 1969 and attracted a 2d stamp duty on a promisory note. But, the 2d seal as shown clearly on the photo, these were phased out between 1956 to 1958 on cheques (after that they had a little sign saying "stamp duty paid.") I am not too sure of the promissory note, cheques were, or maybe are, a form of these. What I am definately sure of is the time they were phased out. Is this worth adding to Wiki's records?   I am also fairly sure that they were phased out because of pressure from the big banks. With the original seal the banks had to pay all the 2d s in advance. With the "stamp duty paid" they only paid up when the blank cheques were actually handed over to the customer. Amazing the lengths Banks will go to to avoid paying anything out Mike

A quick Google would indicate they were all issued in 1969/70, Mike?

In tiny writing at bottom right of the note is given the artist's name, 'Francis Llewelyn Traversi 1969'.

The full story of Mr. Williams' battle with the UK Government is here, it's quite interesting:

By coincidence, Mr Traversi's funeral is 11am this morning in Glan Conwy.

Llinos and I (my Sister) went on a mission today with a Metal Detector  :D   course I'd have to kill you if I told you where it's need to know and all that  D)  Llinos came to collect me this morning and I jumped in the car metal detector in hand, off we went on our treasure hunt.
OH has been taking the mik since I acquired it "what do you expect to find" he'd snigger,  I told him he'd be laughing on the other side of his face when  I get my weekly spot on Time Team as the Professional Metal Detectorist, you watch   $yes$
It was really exciting when it started bleeping, the anticipation of finding a medieval brooch, a spear head or maybe even a Hoard  :o so as you do, out would come the towels, off with the headphones and carefully we'd dig around the object, revealing it bit by bit we were very professional

Needless to say we didn't find "Gold in them there hills" in fact, time after time we'd find another piece of modern day worthless scrap.   ???  We found a piece of iron drain pipe, an old Worthingtons can and to top it off an old bed post  _))*
On the plus side we had a great day,  and a good laugh.  Definitely doing it again  $good$

John Peg, Phil and I went on a bit of a wander last week.  John wanted to show me the interior of The Pen Y Gwryd pub.   The pub is situated at the foot of Snowdon and is the same pub that Scott and Tenzing practiced their successful climb of Everest in 1953.  Walking boots hang as mementos on the ceiling in one snug while signatures of famous climbers decorate the ceiling panels in a room off to the right by the entrance, this room is also lined with varnished wood paneling and it looks fantastic, well worth a visit.
