Conwy Valley holiday village 'that deserves TLC' to be redeveloped in £1m investment
Trem Gwydir, which has Snowdonia views, has been bought by new owners and work is underway to revamp the site

Llanrwst is set to get a major tourism boost later this year with a significant redevelopment of the Trem Gwydir holiday village now underway.

The holiday village, which is located in the centre of the historic Conwy Valley market town, has been open for decades but has needed new investment.

ADVERTISING

Offered for sale in July 2017, it has been purchased by family-owned business Actually Property, which will also operate the holiday park. The sale, worth £625,000, completed last month.

Now the site will now be transformed with significant capital spend, taking the total investment to well in excess of a million pounds.

The 24-lodge holiday park occupies a prime location in the centre of Llanrwst, and comes with scenic views of the River Conwy to the Gwydir Forest and Snowdonia mountains beyond.

The lodges sit in landscaped grounds, with views across the river to the Tu Hwnt i’r Bont tearooms and the town’s picturesque arched stone bridge Pont Fawr – one of the most photographed places in Wales.

PHONE signal could improve in parts of rural Conwy as masts are upgraded by the summer.

Mobile network operator EE said its Pentrefoelas and Llangwm masts will be upgraded as part of the Shared Rural Network initiative, which focuses on areas with high summer demand such as national parks, coastal locations and roads.

EE set up a brand-new mast in Abergele last year and it expects to switch on two more in Abergele and Ffordd Maeshafn. An upgrade will also be carried out in Capel Curig, Snowdonia.

LLANRWST Rural Show has been cancelled for a second year.

The event usually features cattle, sheep, horses, a pet dog show, home produce, old tractors, hand shearing, trade stands, entertainment and more.

In a statement, the committee said: "It is with a heavy heart that the Llanrwst Rural Show Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the show again this year. We realize that this is going to be a huge disappointment for everyone, as is ours, but we must put public safety at the top of our agenda and follow Government and Public Health advice.

"We are extremely disappointed that we have had to make the difficult        ref Pioneer

A bridge that connects Dolgarrog to its train station is to reopen with upgraded facilities, thanks to Welsh Government funding.

The pipe bridge over Afon Conwy has been closed to walkers and local rail users due to significant safety concerns, including the deteriorating condition of the timber deck boards and the need for additional measures to safeguard the water mains supply to over 9,000 homes in North Wales.

A 70-year-old man with a broken hip has been rescued from a deep ravine in Conwy county.        ref BBC

Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue were called to help paramedics who found him slipping in and out of consciousness near Eglwysbach on Saturday afternoon.

Ropes were used to get to the man, before he was hauled up on a stretcher.

The narrow and rough track meant it was not possible to transport him by ambulance, so he was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

A town council in Conwy has submitted a comprehensive study to the Welsh Government, addressing key issues across the region and offering potential cost-effective solutions.

Llanrwst Town Council’s study notes, for instance, the level of pollution along the A470 route through the town, general traffic levels through the town centre and the growth in vehicle size and weight, and the pressure the town’s historic infrastructure is currently under.

It is entitled 'A time for action: an appeal to the Welsh Government'.

A statement from Llanrwst Town Council said: “The A470 trunk road through the centre of Llanrwst – part of the Welsh Government’s ‘Key National Road Network’ - has not been fit for purpose for decades.

VISITORS have been asked to stay away from a lake in a Conwy village and its surrounding area while the body of water is checked for blue-green algae.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is to take test samples in Llyn Crafnant, near Trefriw, for the algae, which produces toxins and can pose threats to the health of people and animals when exposed to it in large amounts.

Ross Morgan, town clerk at Llanrwst Town Council, said: “As town clerk and administrator to the Crafnant Trust, I received a message this morning (Monday, September 6) expressing a concern about the possible appearance of blue-green algal bloom at Llyn Crafnant.

“A second message from NRW indicated that they had received a report and aimed to take samples today to test for the presence of such algae.

“As a precautionary measure, I visited Crafnant early this morning to put up tape and warning notices asking visitors to stay away from the lake and watercourses around the lake and to keep their pets on a lead and away from the water.

“All fishing at the lake is currently suspended.
“Urgent information messages were put on the town council’s Facebook page and that for the village of Trefriw.

“I must stress that, at this time, we have no information on the analysis of algal growth at the lake or confirmation that blue green algae is present.

“Our actions are purely precautionary in the best interests of all visitors to Crafnant and those who live around the lake.”

A spokesperson for Natural Resources Wales added: "We’re investigating reports of blue-green algae at Llyn Crafnant and will be arranging laboratory analysis to confirm what it is. Can’t confirm as yet."              ref pioneer

A LIBRARY has opened with a children’s area and health hub to support physical and mental well-being.

Llanrwst Library has been relocated with a wide range of literature, an exhibition area, flexible space for meetings and activities, and computers and Wi-Fi for public use. Library service will work under a community hub model led by Conwy County Borough Council and partners in the health and third sector.

The relocation from the Plas yn Dre site, which had been used since 1998, follows Welsh Government funding from the Transforming Towns investment programme. The local authority said it would cost £90,000 to repair the former building’s roof, while the relocation was expected to cost £373,800.

The former site had been well-used, with more than 35,000 book loans each year, but the council proposed a move to the ground floor of the 2007-built Glasdir after it fell out of use last year.

Earthquake shakes sofas, wakes dogs and causes 'big rumble' in Snowdonia
Residents in the Conwy Valley heard a 'strange' sound on Sunday night and the British Geological Survey confirmed the earth really did move a little bit.      (the actual headline took me a minute to work out)

Sunday night TV was interrupted by a “big rumble sound” that was heard by communities in the Conwy Valley and beyond.

Some people suspected thunder, others put it down to a large passing vehicle or a sonic boom.

However the British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed the area had suffered a mini earthquake measuring 1.0 on the Richter scale.

TRAFFIC lights could be placed on the A470 in Llanrwst amid “considerable safety concerns” for bus users and schoolchildren.

The Welsh Government will carry out an assessment of the pedestrian crossing and speed of traffic near Parc yr Eryr, Llwyn Brith and Maes Melwr after fears were raised by residents who have to cross the road to get the bus or walk to school.

A NEW housing scheme at the former Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy school in Llanrwst will welcome its most energy-efficient home, an innovative scheme that will be the first of its kind for developers ClwydAlyn Housing.

Work is underway on the fourth and final phase of the site, converting the former school, which is a Grade II listed building, into three apartments (two of which are wheelchair accessible), and the construction of a three-bedroom wheelchair accessible bungalow; the first Beattie Passive House for ClwydAlyn.

The bungalow will be a low-carbon home, which will be built and certified to the energy-efficient Passivhaus standard, providing excellent health and comfort conditions, while using little energy for heating and cooling.
