Llandudno prepares to welcome the cultural Olympiad
« on: July 04, 2012, 09:22:43 am »
THE CURATOR of an exhibition featuring a wingless plane turned art gallery has promised a spectacular show.

Not only will a DC-9 form the centrepiece of cultural celebrations to mark the Olympiad on Llandudno Promenade, but a stuntman will scale the outside of nearby Venue Cymru and harpists will tackle Lady Gaga’s hits.

Welsh artist turned curator Marc Rees, and a bevvy of stunning air stewardesses – in keeping with the aeronautical theme – will lead 600 schoolchildren on a parade along the seafront this Sunday from around 4pm.

Mr Rees, 46, who said a plane was chosen because the show is flying or migrating around Wales, said: “It’s been in Swansea and it’s been amazing. We’ had 12,000 visitors through the plane. It is now in Ebbw Vale (July 1 to July 8) then Llandudno (July 8 to July 15).

He said: “The last event in Ebbw Vale will see it moving off to Llandudno. The arrival this Sunday will be spectacular.”

He will be “captaining” the procession from the pier end of the prom towards Venue Cymru leading 300 local pupils, followed by the DC-9 fuselage pulled by North Wales rugby players, and rounded off by 300 more local schoolchildren, all guided by dance company Dawns i Bawb.

During the week, events include the climber’s daring abseil from Venue Cymru and a sculpture of Motorhead singer Lemmy by local artist Nick Elphick going on show. There will also be harpists from Harmonix group playing Lady Gaga songs and a dancing display a week on Saturday.

Watch Llandudno sculptor create a bust of rock icon Lemmy from Motorhead

An incredible video of a local artist creating a bust of rock icon Lemmy from Motorhead has emerged.
he video shows Llandudno-based artist and sculptor Nick Elphick transforming a polystyrene block into the image of Lemmy (real name Ian Kilmister) who has links to North Wales
The finished article ended up in Lemmy’s house in California.
He said the Motorhead founder and frontman, who was raised in Benllech and attended Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones in Amlwch, was “ace”.

The 69 year-old star was born in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, and later moved with his mum and step-father to Benllech, Anglesey.
Later on the family moved to Conwy and Lemmy even worked at Hotpoint for a time.

After a series of collaborations and some roadie work with Jimi Hendrix he joined Hawkwind, singing lead on the band’s biggest hit Silver Machine.
He left Hawkwind in 1975 and formed Motorhead and the rest is history.

Nick, who obviously has a soft spot for the former Anglesey resident, says he plans to make another polystyrene bust soon.

You have no idea how sad that picture makes me.... I last met Lemmy in 2011, and he has aged 60 years in that time.
