Award winning North Wales pub can only open three days a week due to staffing crisis
This highlights an issue seen across hospitality and leisure due to staff leaving the sectors and Brexit preventing recruitment from the EU

An award winning pub in North Wales says it can only open three days a week due to the recruitment crisis in hospitality that is hitting the sector across the country.

Kinmel Arms at St George near Abergele is currently flooded with bookings and will boom further next week with the spring half term.

My wife and I have been isolating for so long now that it's been about a year since we last went out for a meal.    We were a bit nervous when friends asked us out for a meal a week last Sunday but any apprehension soon went when we arrived at Home from Home Cooking in Penrhyn Bay
The place is spotless and the tables screened off so we relaxed straight away and enjoyed the Sunday roast which was as tasty as when we last went there                     $good$

A RESTAURANT that serves Turkish, Greek, Italian, Spanish and French cuisine in Llandudno could soon be changing hands.

The Mediterranean Restaurant, which has been serving customers in the town for more than 25 years, is run by Ibrahim and Cindy Atay.

The couple are looking to move on to pastures new and also intend to sell their takeaway business in the near future.

A WINE bar forced to close during the pandemic has been given a new lease of life with a revival of the Roaring Twenties.

Waterfront has opened with a 1920s theme in Deganwy after the former Prohibition Wine Bar ceased trading last summer.

It followed a difficult year with zero cashflow for the Station Road bar, sister to Characters Teahouse and Hot Stone Restaurant in Llandudno, was left empty for months with dozens of jobs lost.

Mon Interiors, based in Llandudno Junction, saw an opportunity to reinvigorate the space with the chance of attracting some of the 250,000 that visit Llandudno each year, with a boost in visitors expected amid travel concerns and restrictions.

The interior branding specialist worked over the last 12 months to create the contemporary space, which will offer fine wines and nibbles.

“One of the things we aimed to achieve on this project was a luxury destination that is sensitive to its surroundings,” said Jennifer Williams lead interior designer and owner of Mon Interiors. “A nod to the seaside location - but without being too predictably ‘coastal’.”

The "scourge" of no-shows are a "genuine threat" to already under pressure pubs and restaurants in Wales - but owners are finding ways of tackling the problem.

Hospitality in Wales has reopened after months of lockdown but still faces limits on capacity and the challenges of social distancing.

"Members are telling me that customers are aware of limited space and are making multiple bookings and selecting their destination on the day.

"However, and most importantly, they are not informing the businesses that they will not be attending.

"My local pub lost 30 bookings for Sunday lunch recently for no-shows and another pub was highlighted in the media for 34 no-shows for lunch.

"This shocking position is compounded by the enforced turning away of walk-ins because unfulfilled reservations have taken out the limited capacities available because of regulations under Covid.

I went to the Loaf Cafe on Friday for the first time and really liked the place.   I didn't know where it was until my wife told me and it's situated on the corner of Bodhyfryg Road and Gloddaeth Street and was previously a newsagents.
The food was delicious and there was a good choice on the menu and importantly in the present climate the place feels safe and it had a nice relaxing atmosphere there                 $good$

The Official Jester of Conwy has opened a new coffee shop with his partner - and it even has its own tower!

Russel Erwood, known as Erwyd Le Fol, and Kimberly Edmunds opened the The Jester’s Tower on Castle Square last month.

The cafe is described as set in a ‘unique and quirky space’ over two floors in one of the original medieval towers of Conwy town walls, originally used as a lookout tower.

The Jester’s Tower offers a range of food and drink options including house cured salt beef, sandwiches, Welsh cakes made to the jester’s family recipe and coffee made with beans from Heartland Coffee Roasters in Llandudno

The cafe that's ranked the number one place to eat in Llandudno
The Loaf Coffee and Sandwich Bar boasts one of the best breakfasts in Llandudno but if it wasn't for the queue you might not notice it

We went there just after 10.00 am one day and had the breakfast ( it is only served up to 11.00am ) and really enjoyed it.   It's lovely food and very good value for money

Pubs, hotels and restaurants in North Wales tourist towns having to turn away customers due to lack of staff

The lockdown hit hospitality and retail sectors have been impacted by staff leaving during the pandemic and Brexit making recruitment from the EU far more challenging.

One of the biggest issues is Brexit stopping workers coming from the EU.

Hmmm.  But how many of the retail sectors made staff redundant to save themselves a bit of money? That report is one-sided.

So many factors in this issue, brexit has a very big impact in it, the Europeans would work and mostly live together, also the wage has a lot to do with it, when the St Georges hotel advertise for loads of staff it's telling you something, shame the likes of Jfs don't come in the real world.

A CAFE with an environmentally friendly twist will soon be opening its doors in Conwy.

The Conwy Repair Cafe will have a ‘soft launch’ in St Mary’s Church Hall on Wednesday, September 8 from 10am - 1pm, ahead of its official public opening on Wednesday, October 13 at Llandudno Junction Community Club.

The Friends of the Earth-backed project, organised through Repair Cafe Wales, will differ from your standard cafe thanks to an important idea to help stop broken items ending up in landfill.

Repair cafes are run by volunteers, some of whom are ‘fixers’, who will try to repair broken items that people bring in.
Fixers can share their skills, empowering people to carry out their own repairs in the future.

Alison Shaw, of Conwy's Repair Cafe, said: "We throw away vast amounts of stuff; even things with almost nothing wrong seem beyond repair.

“The trouble is, many of us have forgotten that we can repair things ourselves, or we can't remember how."

There are more than 1,500 Repair Cafes across the globe, with many in the UK.
The volume of raw materials and energy needed to make new products is reduced as a result, and can save people money.

The Repair Cafe also lets people see their possessions in a new light, and once again appreciate their value, as well as changing people's mindsets - essential to kindling enthusiasm for a sustainable society.

And as well as being able to get your broken goods fixed while having a chat, you can have a brew and a piece of cake.

If you think you have skills you can offer, or would like to help behind the scenes, please email repair.cafe.conwy@gmail.com or register your availability and capabilities for the Conwy Repair Cafe at www.repaircafewales.org/volunteer-form.
