Marks and Spencer is planning big changes at its stores - with a further move towards food.

The company has said it wants to target the weekly family shop by having more stores that offer its full range of food.
This could see new supermarket style stores built or existing stores turning over more space to food.

In Llandudno a new store is planned for Parc Llandudno retail park with the Mostyn Street branch closing.
Under these plans that new shop could be more focused on food - although it is understood there are currently covenants in place that prevent the opening of a food store at the site.

The move ties in with a recent deal with Ocado, under which Ocado will offer the full M&S product line for home delivery.
In a letter to suppliers, M&S said it was not getting its line of food products "in front of enough customers" - leaving shoppers assuming that they do not have a full range.

"This must change, and it will. The full range will go online with Ocado and we are starting a store renewal programme that will get more products in front of more customers with bigger, better M&S Food Halls in new and existing sites," the letter said.

The last HMV store in North Wales is now set to close - but a major campaign has been started to save the shop.

The music store in Llandudno was recently spared from a closure programme when the brand was bought out of administration by Sunrise Records, but staff have now been told the shop will close on Sunday, April 28.

It is understood that it is related to the lease ending on the existing property, with hopes that another site could be found to keep the brand in the town .
A campaign by staff and loyal customers has been launched with an online petition which aims to stop the closure.

If they are looking for alternative premises locally and given the fact HMV have another 100 stores throughout the UK, I wonder why HMV are advertising in their window -  Everything Must Go.

Interesting to read that three Mostyn St. shops are part of the same company.

Philip Day has a formidable reputation for turning round distressed businesses.
He understands clothing retail very deeply.
I’d bet on him to save this ailing business, but it certainly will be at the expense of poor performing branches.

Can Llandudno support two Boot's stores ? ......

The US owner   ???  of pharmacy chain Boots has warned of possible store closures in the UK as it tries to cut costs.

Walgreens Boots Alliance said it would take "decisive steps" to reduce costs as part of a company-wide "significant restructuring".

The move comes after the chain said it had suffered its "most difficult quarter" since the firm's formation, with UK like-for-like sales down 2.3%.
The chain has 2,485 stores across the UK, employing about 56,000 staff.
The firm said a store portfolio review was underway across the global business.

Lidl names SIX North Wales towns where it wants to build new stores
The chain has expanded rapidly in recent years in the region but has an appetite for more growth.
The retailer's list for new stores includes Rhyl, Abergele, Flint, Caernarfon and Llandudno.   ref DP

I saw this delightful advertisement, amongst many other quaint ones in the Llandudno newspaper from 1903.
What puzzles me is, what were they actually selling?

It was a drapers' shop.  Later it became the District Bank and later still that became the Natwest.  Then I think it was the Woolwich and has had a number of retail uses since.  Upstairs was the headquarters of the Conway Valley Water Board until 1972.

Some things, however, don't change - the pillar box is still there!
