Thanks for letting us know Ian,  I had been trying to get on during the day and thought my computer was playing up.   I had an e-mail from Mull later and he had been trying to do the same.
I'm pleased it's back online

Apologies for yesterday's outage.  Heart - our hosting provider - fell over and was offline for 24 hours. In this day and age 24 hours outage is absurd. Trouble is Heart is the O'Reilly of internet hosts...

Looking at their face book page as well, it looks as if a fair number, including resellers are mightily fed up with Heart. It sounds as if they were OK until a takeover.

Could be worse though, one host I used just packed up over night, which cause me some additional hassle as my domain names (just two) were registered with them and I used their email. It took a bit of time to regain control of the domains to change DNS to get going again...

Whatever, it's incredibly frustrating being down that length of time, by the sound of things getting nothing in the way of updates from the provider, and being powerless, isn't it?

I'm a bit concerned as my address bar has an exclamation mark in a circle and it's stating Not Secure when I'm on the site, what does that mean?

Your system stat counter has a security risk.

For a different take...

The connection is an insecure http one rather than an encrypted http one. This means your data could be intercepted and read by third parties. It’s up to you to assess but the greatest risks might be where you make financial transactions and I wouldn’t use bank or online shopping at all without a secure connection.

A forum probably carries less risk but bear in mind you are posting personal information even if it’s only log in details.  Some will suggest that all sites should be https to make it harder for the governments, etc, to monitor...

Another consideration is where you are connecting from. Your home LAN is safer than an open wifi hotspot…

I notice that this forum does offer a https connection but there is a warning for the SSL certificate (needed for https) . It’s possibly something to do with a certificate being shared over a few of the host IPs pages rather than a dedicated one or something along those.  It’s probably best to let Ian or someone clarify this situation.

Should read The connection is an insecure http one rather than an encrypted https one.

Each time a new browser is issued it comes with increasingly scary warnings. In reality, however, as long as we're not sharing personal details (and we don't) this only affects those who need secure connections. The sad reality is that https is not that foolproof; if you want to stay totally safe, never go on the internet is the best advice. Apart from that, common-sense is the best protection when using the internet.  Even the best VPNs don't offer perfect security.

We don't say these things often enough, but on this site we owe a debt to SteveH, our News hound who, through his prodigious selection and regular searching of the broadsheets keeps us alerted to any and all news developments locally.

Thanks, Steve;  the forum would be far poorer without you.
