Avro Anson N5130 - Marl Woods 15 Feb 1944
« on: January 25, 2012, 12:17:18 pm »
although this tragic aircrash took place many years ago , I have been able to contact some 5 eye witnesses to what may have happened on that afternoon in Marl Woods Llandudno Junction .....anyone who has data or photographs of the incident or area during or after the 15th Feb 1944 please help us to enhance what little information we have so far to enable us to produce a researched report for our newly formed Deganwy History Group , I hope to give a talk on this to our members and anyone else whose interested during September 2012 . ....the photograph attached shows what we think is the area where the aircraft came down i.e.to the left beside the new A470 ROUNDABOUT    somewhere within the adjacent field and Marl Woods.....but we do need more clarification to exactly where the aircraft fuselage was situated and possible then we as a local community (with planning approval) can leave a plaque or memorial stone to honour the five fatalities on that fateful day ........

I'm sorry but I have no info on that crash but in Christopher Draper's walking book "Walks from Llandudno" pg 89  he refers to a Handley Page Halifax HR723 that crashed on 27th October 1944 in a field near Bryn Pydew.
Seven people baled out and six survived the fall but the wireless Operator's parachute failed to open and he was killed. The pilotless Halifax spiralled out of control until finally crashing into a cowshed.

I attended a site visit last year together with witnesses of the event in 1944 and met Eddie Doylerush then.

Eddie and ogh47 will be giving a talk jointly on the subject to the History of Deganwy Group at Peniel Chapel on Thursday, September 20th

Non-members will be welcome.

It promises to be a very informative evening.

I am told an old house name plaque I have inherited is painted in a piece of metal from this aircraft. Knowing my uncle.......I can well believe this story, it’s the sort of thing he would have done growing up in Pydew in the 1940s
