A POPULAR visitor location in Conwy will be closed to vehicles for two months.

Conwy County Borough Council said vehicle access to Conwy Quay will be prohibited until September as it expects "significant numbers of visitors" to the town.

Parking spaces on Castle Street will also be closed as part of the plan free up space for pedestrians and for shoppers to queue outside nearby premises.

The closure will be in place from Monday, July 26 to Wednesday, September 21.

Motorists are being advised to use pay and display parking at Vicarage Gardens and Market Place.

The council said: "Conwy Quay will be closed to vehicles during the school summer holidays, to keep pedestrians safe during this busy time.

"Some car parking spaces on Castle Street will also be unavailable, to help pedestrians and people queuing at shops.

"We are expecting significant numbers of visitors to Conwy town this summer, and this will help to keep residents and visitors safe."

MOH and I spent a couple of hours at RSPB Conwy this morning, a regular trip out for us. Good weather, beautiful scenery, and a glimpse of the Carneddau pony foals. We walked back to the visitor centre via the waterside path and all was good as we watched the oystercatchers and other wading birds along the way. Then, out of nowhere, a jetskier appeared, heading upstream at some speed and really churning up the water.

I don't know what rules apply along that section of the river, but surely such activity is in direct opposition to the work of the staff and volunteers at the reserve?

Jet Ski's are a pet hate of mine, I had a go on them in the 80's off Rhos, some distance from the shore, but I feel over time like cars, they are being used unreasonably, when I lived up by Llyn Geirionydd, the power boat club, allowed jet skis to use their slip, but of course they did not need a slip, quite a few summer nights were disturbed by these idiots, screaming around the Llyn, no thought for anyone or anything else, as for rules, they appear to do as they please.   $angry$

There have been incidents recently about jet skiers riding through flocks of sea birds near Holyhead and I can remember them riding at Swans near the Conwy Marina and one idiot drove at and killed a Swan.
I can't remember what happened to the idiot who did that or even if he was ever caught

I'm just glad that I wasn't there at the time to give him a taste of his own medicine but Karma comes around in time.

The loud, polluting, and potentially dangerous jet skis ruining the tranquillity of Wales' beaches
Is it time to end the 'free for all' as sea scooters tear up our peaceful beaches
17:07, 26 JUL 2021

While the mercury in Wales soared and people flocked to the coastline, there's been no hotter topic than the problem of sea scooters and the way they turn areas of outstanding natural beauty into something sounding like Brands Hatch race circuit.

The rules state that personal watercraft shouldn't be within 100m of the shore and only travel at low speed when close to land. However, this is enforced by a series of byelaws and they're not always adhered to.

Couldn't agree more about Jet Skis , they bring little to the local economy except noise and disturbance. Ban them!

A landlord has questioned the sense of new parking restrictions in the centre of Conwy.

Conwy County Borough Council has stopped vehicle access to Conwy Quay until September and closed off free parking spots on Castle Street to allow extra space for pedestrians and for shoppers to queue outside shops.

MORE places have put in bids to be awarded the next UK City of Culture than ever before, with Conwy facing strong competition from across the four nations.

The UK Government Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said a record 20 places have expressed an interest in hosting a year of cultural festivities in 2025.

The bidding local authorities, which include Conwy County, Wolverhampton, Stirling and a joint application from Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon in Northern Ireland, will be reduced to an initial longlist in the coming weeks.

For the first time, those which are longlisted will be awarded grants of £40,000 to support the next stage of their applications.

The judging panel will cut down the longlist to a final shortlist in early 2022, with the winner confirmed in May.

A SUMMER holiday ban on the use of vehicles along Conwy Quay amidst "significant numbers of visitors” has been extended for another month.

Conwy County Borough Council, which had implemented the traffic-free zone at the quay from the end of July to late September, said the measure will now remain in place until after the October half-term holiday.

The measure was originally brought in during the school summer holidays, however the council said it decided to enforce the extension after it received “positive feedback” from residents.

Conwy Quay is one of the busiest areas in the town, as the location of the Smallest House in Great Britain and near the 13th century Conwy Castle.

Parking spaces on Castle Street have also been closed as part of the plan, which aims to free up pedestrian space and make the area safer for visitors. It is also designed to enable shoppers to queue outside nearby premises, the council said.

Motorists continue to be advised to use pay and display parking at Vicarage Gardens and Market Place.

“We had positive feedback from residents and visitors about the traffic free zone at Conwy Quay over the summer,” a council spokesperson said. “So we’ve decided to extend this until the end of October, after the half term holiday.”   ref pioneer

Conwy remains extremely busy even with schools going back, it looks like those not bound to school holidays are now getting out and about and the visitor numbers remain high. I like the closure on the quay but wish the council would do more to keep the town looking clean, it is a bit grotty especially if it hasn't rained for a few weeks. The rain yesterday was most welcome and did plenty to kill off the smell of pee.

There should be a smoking ban on the quay as well. Impossible to take two steps without someone blowing smoke in your face.

Wrexham stays in race for UK City of Culture as Conwy and Bangor miss out
Wrexham now takes the hopes of Wales with it as the only Welsh place on the UK long list

Sadly, Conwy was one of the 12 bids to lose out on the UK Government's cultural award, which has resulted in millions of pounds of investment and a surge in tourism for previous winners such as Hull and Coventry.
