Council poised to appropriate more land for children’s 'flagship' assessment centre in Colwyn Bay

NOT everyone is happy a council is poised to appropriate more land for a “flagship” assessment centre for children with complex needs, after hitting several snags with the site.

The proposal for three new buildings on the area of now demolished Meadow Lodge, on Abergele Road adjacent to Eirias Park in Colwyn Bay,  was passed by Conwy county councillors in November last year.

The ground-breaking scheme will house experts assessing appropriate care options for children aged between six and 17 years old.

The aim is to stop the expensive practice of sending children with complex emotional needs out of county and give families a chance to reconcile.

A Conwy county councillor has criticised a proposed 73-home development in Old Colwyn, saying residents are already “infuriated” and the scheme could “sound the death knell of the village”.

Cllr Bob Squire (Eirias ward) has long been an outspoken critic of over-development in the area.

In March last year he said new housing schemes were “destroying the quality of life” for his constituents and putting a strain on local services.

Now he has railed against a mixed planning application on land adjacent to  Bryn Rodyn, Dolwen Road, which is bidding for full permission for 54 homes and outline approval on 19 dwellings.

Conwy Council has launched a consultation to turn libraries into community hubs sadly their plans for the much-loved building in Colwyn Bay include closure and moving a small part of the existing Library into the ground floor of the Coed Pella Offices.

The community is outraged and wants the library to stay where it is and become a hub.

The library is a warm, friendly well-run, and much-loved service, to move it to Coed Pella would destroy everything that is wonderful about the library.

COLWYN Bay’s town clock should be back in place at the bottom of Station Road next Spring.

The clock was removed in early Autumn 2018 for refurbishment as it had deteriorated and was reaching a point where its structural integrity would become a concern.

A spokesperson for Colwyn Bay town council and the Andrew Fraser Memorial Clock Trust said: “An order has recently been placed with the clock manufacturer, Smith of Derby, to produce a replica clock top using elements from the original clock, mounted on a new cast iron pillar.

“This follows the successful fund raising efforts of the town council and the trustees, who have raised the £21,868 required from various grants and donations.

The memorial clock was presented to the people of Colwyn Bay by Mr and Mrs Stanley Fraser, the parents of Andrew Fraser, who died in 1984 at the age of 33.

It was erected in September 1989 by J B Joyce and Co and bore a memorial plaque to Peter Bellingham of Whitchurch, an employee of J B Joyce, who was fatally injured whilst working on the installation of the clock.                                   ref Pioneer

A COLWYN Bay resident has been moved to thank those who supported a committee dedicated to the successful return of a much-loved clock in the town.

The Colwyn Bay Town Clock Committee had reported last week that a new clock had been installed in Station Road, with thanks given to all those that supported the project financially.

However, Claire Fox – a resident – wants more people to be aware of the clock's return after three years and she thanked all those that worked towards making it happen.
"I just wanted people to know that there's a clock back up there now, and it can be something that were are all proud of as it was a focal point of the bay," she said.

"They have had to do a replacement clock. It was taken away in 2018, but the people who did couldn't restore it so they have done a new clock.

ARTIST impressions have been released ahead of a major project starting at Old Colwyn promenade to strengthen the Victorian sea defences.

The work, commencing in April, will see the promenade closed for up to 12 months.

Diversions will be in place for traffic and cyclists and pedestrians will be diverted to the raised path at the back of the prom.

The work is being carried out to protect the promenade from rough seas, high tides and storms.

Conwy County Borough Council will be installing a rock barricade from Rotary Way to Splash Point, by Old Colwyn Arches.

AN OLD entry from Colwyn Bay promenade to the railway station could be reopened.

Transport for Wales (TfW) will carry out a feasibility study over reopening the entry as part of its Station Travel Plan for Colwyn Bay.

It is hoped that the entry would provide immediate access to the beach from Colwyn Bay Station and showcase the town’s waterfront, particularly to first time visitors to the town.

Darren Millar, MS for Clwyd West, put forward the proposal to TfW and Network Rail during a meeting over the future of the station, which will be assessed by the travel plan in the coming months.

The plan will look at issues such as costs, passenger numbers and destinations, and issues such as disabled access.

Mr Millar said: “I am delighted that Transport for Wales and Network Rail were open to my proposal and have agreed to incorporate a feasibility study into it.

“Colwyn Bay has a spectacular promenade, but sadly those visiting the town don’t get to see it when they arrive by train.

“First impressions matter so I really hope that plans to reopen the promenade access can be realised.

“If it is deemed feasible then funding will need to be secured to deliver the proposal.”                    ref Pioneer

THE contract for a new disability respite centre, cafe, shop and support facilities in Conwy Bay has been awarded.

Wynne Construction Ltd has secured the contract for Bront y Nant, near Colwyn Bay Crematorium.

There will be a disability respite facility and complex care day centre on the top site.

The facility will provide five furnished apartments, communal space and support staff accommodation for those with disability support needs. The day centre will provide daily respite services for those with complex needs.

On the lower site, Bryn Euryn Nurseries will be developed to provide a café, shop and plant selling area, and the access to the cemetery and nurseries will be integrated.

Wynne Construction will move onto the site on April 26.
Work is expected to take over a year.

A spokesperson from Conwy County Borough Council said: "The cost of the build is £5.5million funded through Welsh Government Integrated Care Fund (ICF) and prudential borrowing."         ref Pioneer

A WOMAN in her late 50s and a man in his 30s were said to be acting "suspiciously" around two dogs in Colwyn Bay.

The incident happened in at Eirias Park.

NWP Community Safety Central post on Facebook on April 29: "We have had a report of suspicious activity in Eirias Park in Colwyn Bay.

"A female was with her two dogs in the park. The dogs were off the lead.

"A female in her late 50s and a male in his late 30s were acting suspiciously around the dogs.

"The owner called her dogs and the suspicious couple left very swiftly.

"If you walk your dogs in this area please be vigilant."

I am in favour of BID projects, but like any successful business, you need the right people with proven experience, not enthusiastic amateurs, the amount of money in the cash pot £300.000 unspent is showing a lack of competence in the goal of the project.

Cash paid to failed BID group by North Wales businesses should now be saved from going to the Crown
Conwy council says progress has been made to ensure that money in the Colwyn BID cash pot will be spent locally

Hundreds of thousands of pounds of regeneration cash paid in by Colwyn BID businesses should now be invested in the local area after “progress” was made to save the money from going to the Crown.

The Business Improvement District (BID) launched in 2016 with businesses paying in a levy to pay for projects to regenerate and promote Colwyn Bay, Mochdre, Rhos-on-Sea and Old Colwyn.

But the BID proved unsuccessful with delays on delivering projects and it was terminated early - with the directors of the BID resigning last March.

I read in the Pioneer today that Anwyl Construction has been granted planning permission for 39 new houses to be built on the Glyn Farm land.       Four of these 39 houses will be "affordable homes" so it'll be interesting to see how affordable they are for local people

The Company has also applied for planning permission to build houses on part of Bodafon Fields so they will be busy in this area for a while.       They have promised to submit a long awaited  application for apartments on the old Penmorfa site in Llandudno this Summer which should be interesting to see

Warning to dog owners after 'starfish apocalypse' on North Wales beach
The sea creatures, brought ashore at Colwyn Bay by recent bad weather, can be toxic to dogs

The walker said he has seen a few hundred, and maybe up to 500 or more, of the Starfish washed up at the Old Colwyn end of the beach just before Rainbow Bridge.
