Remember my father going on about the sea defences for the railway there in the 1950/60s. Certainly nothing new.

COLWYN Bay fireworks display will be held on bonfire night at Eirias Park.

The event will start at 7.15pm with the bonfire lighting followed by the fireworks display at 7.30pm. The bonfire will be located outside of the boating lake.

The event has been organised by Colwyn Bay town council and Colwyn Bay fire station.

A spokesperson for the town council said: “Free parking will be available at the Civic Centre, North Wales Police Headquarters (Abergele Road), Eirias Arena, and the Promenade. Disabled Parking only will be available at Eirias High School. A disabled viewing area will be provided outside the Barn (accessed via the Arena car park - gate C), please call 01492 532248 to book a space, as numbers are limited.

“Traffic through the town is expected to be busy so please allow plenty of time to park and walk into the park. Pedestrian entry will be via the main park gates, the Civic Centre driveway or the Promenade.

“Entrance will be free, but there will be a cash collection on the night, with fifty per cent of all monies collected being given by the Fire Service to local charities.

“The event will go ahead whatever the weather (unless we have to call it off on safety grounds, for example: due to strong winds from a southerly direction). Rain will not prevent the event from going ahead.”                                                      ref Pioneer

AN INVESTMENT of £1.6 million is to be made to improve the sea defences on Old Colwyn sea front.

The Welsh Government has made the commitment after calls had been made to upgrade the defences which play a vital role in protecting not only the promenade, but the A55, the main railway line and main sewerage network.

Darren Millar AM, welcomed today’s news but more would be needed for a significant upgrade.

He said: “The cash falls well short of the overall total needed for a significant upgrade to the sea defences in Old Colwyn, but it is welcome none the less.   cont  https://www.northwalespioneer.co.uk/news/18018889.old-colwyn-sea-defences-get-1-6-million-investment/

COLWYN Bay’s town clock should be back in place at the bottom of Station Road next Spring.

The clock was removed in early Autumn 2018 for refurbishment as it had deteriorated and was reaching a point where its structural integrity would become a concern.

A spokesperson for Colwyn Bay town council and the Andrew Fraser Memorial Clock Trust said: “An order has recently been placed with the clock manufacturer, Smith of Derby, to produce a replica clock top using elements from the original clock, mounted on a new cast iron pillar.

“This follows the successful fund raising efforts of the town council and the trustees, who have raised the £21,868 required from various grants and donations.

The memorial clock was presented to the people of Colwyn Bay by Mr and Mrs Stanley Fraser, the parents of Andrew Fraser, who died in 1984 at the age of 33.

It was erected in September 1989 by J B Joyce and Co and bore a memorial plaque to Peter Bellingham of Whitchurch, an employee of J B Joyce, who was fatally injured whilst working on the installation of the clock.                                   ref Pioneer

OLD Colwyn promenade will be closed for six months as work to strengthen the Victorian sea defences starts.

Work will start at Splash Point on Old Colwyn promenade next week.

To protect the promenade from rough seas and high tides, Conwy County Borough Council will be installing a rock revetment up to two-metres higher than the current promenade level.
They will also improve a section of the cycle path from the Llanddulas direction and raise the existing slipway.

The promenade will be closed to traffic, cyclists and pedestrians from Rotary Way east to Beach Road and Cliff Gardens for up to six months.

Cllr Greg Robbins, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation said: “This is essential work which protects the promenade, the national cycle route, and the A55 and railway bridges. We understand that closing the road is inconvenient, but without this work, there is a high chance that after a bad storm the promenade could need to be closed indefinitely.

“The rock revetment will be similar to the defences already in place immediately east of Porth Eirias. The rocks will absorb the wave energy, resulting in smaller waves and reducing the pressure on the Victorian seawall.”

The £1.6m work is being funded by Welsh Government, through the Active Travel scheme.
It is the first phase of improvements.

The Council is working on the design for improving the promenade and sea defences from Porth Eirias to Splash Point, and continuing to look for funding for these future phases.                                         ref Pioneer

Re above looking at the Eventbright site  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/   I found it is a two night cinema experience, on Sat. 13th June
Bohemian Rhapsody followed by Grease on Sun 14th June

Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound and culminates in their iconic performance at Live Aid.        https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bohemian-rhapsody-outdoor-cinema-experience-in-colwyn-bay-tickets-89562745583?aff=ebdshpfprimarybucket

I get local updates from "In Your area"  this piece is from a blog, so not sure of source or if it is genuine, I remember this from the past, and it is a shame, if it is the same one that has allegedly been broken.

"This fountain originally sat on the Promenade, it looks like the one below,
It was moved to Larkfield house many years ago. Cartrefi Conwy has been in the garden of Larkfield house with a JCB and literally shoved the front and back gardens,  bulldozing plants and soil as well as this historic garden feature, have this company no shame?"

Steve  if you have a bit of spare time have a look at Brenig construction's  tie up with Cartrefi Conwy and it's spectacular turnover increase over the last 3years
It has a project in Llandudno junction (old school) two bedroom flats well over £200,00. ,How can planning then go to developers and ask them to build affordable housing cir £180,000.
The Welsh Office have just had a seminar at Venue Cymru for developers and local planners.the jist of this is that Wales is going to lead the UK in sustainable housing,
Builders and developers will have to design in heat pumps rainwater harvesting solar heating and PV cells to make housing carbon neutral.
Fine you say  when asked by Hugo's favourite developers how this will affect affordable housing ,as the feeling in the room was that it would be impossible to build these when the new rules are implemented the Welsh Office officer said it was more important to meet the county's carbon footprint goals .

WORK on a £3.5m affordable housing development on the site of a former hotel has started.

Anwyl Partnerships has started construction on the site of the former Edelweiss Hotel. A total of 31 apartments will be created. This includes 14 one-bedroom and 17 two-bedroom homes in Colwyn Bay.

The former hotel, once known as one of the jewels in Colwyn Bay’s crown, was demolished, making way for re-development.

ClwydAlyn acquired the site several years prior and appointed Anwyl Partnerships as its preferred construction partner, marking the third project Anwyl is currently on site with for the social housing provider.   cont  https://www.northwalespioneer.co.uk/news/18262305.work-starts-apartment-development-site-former-edelweiss-hotel-colwyn-bay/
