The Old Colwyn end of the Prom takes a real battering with any big tide - its amazing that no work has ever been carried out to improve the sea defences there.

A campaign has been launched to teach life-saving skills to people in four communities within the area.

Colwyn Business Improvement District (Colwyn BID) has funded the installation of nine defibrillators in Old Colwyn, Colwyn Bay, Mochdre and Rhos-on-Sea which are all located in public areas accessible 24 hours, seven days a week.

A number of free training sessions are set to be held in the area to teach residents the skills they need to one day potentially save a life.
The first free training session at Old Colwyn Community Centre, Greenhill Road, attracted a number would-be life-savers from across the area.
There are more sessions planned at Old Colwyn Community Centre on Monday, March 11, and the Station pub, Station Road, Colwyn Bay, on April 10, between 6pm and 8pm on both occasions.

Colwyn BID manager, Cheryl Williams, said the defibrillators will prove to be a valuable asset to the area.
She said: “We need to ensure the community is aware they are there and how they work. The more people trained in the use of defibrillators, the better.

“The cost of installing the PADS was more than £15,000, including the cabinets they are stored in. We installed special stainless steel cabinets for those located near the seafront to help prevent corrosion.
“We have put on the training sessions with the help of Tomos Hughes, who started his own charity Achub Calon y Dyffryn (Saving the Heart of the Valley).

“Tomos works with the Welsh Ambulance Service and the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and is teaching people how to use PADS and how to carry out basic First Aid.
“I’m delighted so many members of the general public and not just BID members have come along to take part in the training. The knowledge they gain and the skills they learn could well save a life.”

Supply teaching assistant Libre DiCapula, who lives in Colwyn Bay, took her daughter Saskia, 11, along to the training event and says the experience was well worth it.
She said: “I wanted my daughter to get an understanding of what to do in the event of someone having a cardiac arrest and I wanted her to know how to use a defibrillator.

“I also wanted to refresh my own skills as it’s several years since I last did any training. Tomos was fantastic and the session was absolutely brilliant. I’ve been on lots of courses but this was the best and I came away a lot more confident and felt I’d learned a great deal.
“It’s brilliant Colwyn BID put the training session on and allowed everyone to attend, it might just save a life.”

A Conwy councillor has warned a neighbouring authority not to move its homeless to his county.

Colwyn Bay county councillor, Bob Squire, made the call as Denbighshire looks to move its homeless residents out of Rhyl hotels ahead of the tourist season.
Denbighshire has been criticised for the move with North Wales AM, Llyr Gruffydd, calling it “social cleansing”.

Now cllr Squire has warned Denbighshire that Conwy does not have the capacity to deal with its own homeless as well as extra numbers from outside the county.

He said: “I hope they look after them themselves and re-home them within Denbighshire because if they enable people to go into other authority areas it will give those authorities a big problem. For instance in Colwyn Bay where there is a lot of HMOs (houses of multiple occupation). I am sure they will take advantage of that and Denbighshire knows it but it’s wrong to inflict this on other authorities when we are trying take care of our own people here in Conwy.”

A spokesman for Denbighshire Council responded: “We are reassuring families and individuals they will not be moved until suitable accommodation is found, preferably in their own community wherever possible and if it’s appropriate.

“Denbighshire Homelessness Prevention team’s aim is to support households into suitable permanent accommodation, but it is within an individual’s rights to choose where they reside on a permanent basis.”

In response to the criticism of attempts to move homeless people from Rhyl leading councillors, in a joint statement, have hit back saying they are doing all they can to make the situation better.

Currently the council has 89 households in emergency accommodation, mainly in B&B type facilities in Rhyl.
In addition there are 42 households in temporary accommodation, awaiting a permanent residence.

Cllr Bobby Feeley, the cabinet member for well being, said: “Housing is a priority for the council and we are working hard to ensure everyone is supported to live in homes that meet their needs. The council’s aim is to end homelessness within Denbighshire.  We realise this is an ambitious aim, but one we feel is important.

“Our dedicated homelessness prevention team provides a wide range of support for people who unfortunately find themselves homeless, including working with private and social landlords to ensure properties are available, the prevention of homelessness by working with households to overcome problems and support for people requiring emergency and temporary accommodation.”

Rhyl South East county councillor, Brian Blakeley, the council’s homelessness champion, said: “Hotels are occasionally used by the council to provide short-term emergency accommodation for those in need, but they are not seen as a long-term solution and our aim is to re-house families and individuals in accommodation that meets their needs as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

He added: “As a council, we have a vision for Rhyl that sees a vibrant retail, leisure and tourist industry and want to support local businesses in being part of this.

“It will continue to be necessary to use hotels and B&Bs to enable us to meet our obligations to households who require emergency accommodation, but it is important to ensure we have the balance right to ensure such accommodation is used appropriately and as a short-term measure while households are supported to find permanent housing.”  ref pioneer

Water has been spotted spurting out of the pavement in Old Colwyn.

Old Colwyn's flood defences have been a hot topic of late due to recent storms causing damage and flooding to the area.

Councillors and AMs have said the flood defences remain one bad storm away from falling apart and the recent photos from Regina Thurley, an Old Colwyn resident, show more cracks beginning to show following Storm Gareth.

Photos showed water spurting out from under the pavement and running across the footpath.

Bay of Colwyn towns adopting water bottle refill scheme to fight plastic pollution problem

Launched by Colwyn BID (Business Improvement District) the Refill Colwyn project has received support from across Mochdre, Rhos-on-Sea, Colwyn Bay and Old Colwyn.

Stores, pubs, banks, community centres, and cafes are signing up to become Refill Stations, placing a poster in their window to alert customers and visitors they can top-up their water containers for free, rather than buying another single-use plastic bottle.

We normally go to the skip for lunch but on Saturday we went for an early dinner and afterwards we were treated to this lovely sunset.
The waitress told us that the tide had come in that afternoon higher than they remembered in the 4 years they had been there.
